Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

TREATMENT
The safest and most commonly recommended method for mild to moderate cases of scaly leg mites is a simple, chemical-free process:

1) soak the feet and legs in warm water
2) dry with a towel, gently exfoliating any dead, loose scales.
3) dip feet and legs in oil, (linseed, mineral, olive, vegetable) which suffocates the mites.
4) wipe off linseed oil and slather affected area with petroleum jelly.

The petroleum jelly should be reapplied several times each week until the affected areas return to normal. It may take several months for mild to moderate cases to resolve.

An alternate treatment option for scaly leg mites is to mix 2 tablespoons of sulfur powder with ½ cup petroleum jelly- applied daily for a minimum of two weeks.

In severe cases of scaly leg mite, oral or injectable forms of Ivermectin may be prescribed by a veterinarian. Per Dr. Julie Gauthier, DVM in Chicken Health for Dummies, the dosage is 0.2 mg/kg per bird, repeated in ten days.

I like the soaking and exfoliating and oil... or vaseline... I think that it would work with the scarring, even if he doesn't have mites anymore

I put a thread up over in diseases. And I took a picture. I've been doing some reading, and it looks like a good soak and a light scrubbing. Then castor oil, will be our best course of action.

that's such a great idea Sally, that's what I did for myself for my birthday... got chicks...wish my birthday was in the summer... now I just have to convince Peachy not to brood in winter.

one of the SLW eggs broke under Violet today. so she's down to 7.

I got 17 eggs today out of 19 (Peach is back to laying) worked the short route and when I got home there was almost no chores to do! how nice is that??? especially since it was 91* and felt like 97*... actually it was a bit cooler at home, but only about 4 degrees... then we had a humongous thunder and lightning storm with tons of rain... it's so much cooler now.

Linda, x2 with Sally, really hoping you're feeling better!!!!!!

Thanks you guys and greetings from Hawaii (the Big Island)! Can't say that I'm up and dancing, but managing things okay (lots of ibuprofen - I should buy stock!

) We are staying south of a little village called Pahoa, a few minutes walking distance to the ocean. Mostly lava rocks and very few beaches, but some good areas for snorkeling and swimming in little ocean pools that are naturally thermally heated. So far we have seen one muscovy duck (hanging out down the street) and a few flocks of roaming chickens here and there- causes almost as much excitement as the beautiful green geckos that wall walk around the house. Today we pulled over by the side of the road to check a map, and about 5 or 6 young cockerels came running up to the car from the edge of the woods jungle. Apparently they have learned to beg for food from passersby; we crinkled a bag as a test and they got very excited.

The adult chickens showed up soon after. No obvious breeds, just long legged thin types of all different colors.

Tomorrow we are going to do touristy stuff up around Hilo, There is a very cool botanical garden and some waterfalls. Next day will be exploring Kilauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, although some parts of the park are closed due to excessive fumes.

The pictures are great and I'm keeping up with all the news, but sitting and typing at the computer is very hard on my "condition" so I won't post too much, but have to say that the pic of Mylee-the-little-pink-speck running down the mowed path was my favorite... until I watched the video of her chasing butterflies. So sweet! And ladybug boots! They would look great with the ballerina swimsuit.

Take care everyone and happy chickens!!

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time

I want to visit there so much! DH was stationed with a good friend that was born and raised there. He is so sweet, I love to talk to him on the phone. ( Its the same guy Ron that lives in Vallejo now) He tells me about how each island is different, and how pretty it is! The pools seem to be wonderful for sore joints, he has elbow probs and tells me about lying in them to feel better.
Be careful on the Ibuprofen, it can really tear you up internally. sure does the job on a sore back tho!
Thats so cool on the wild chickens! I would be parked there all day!

Linda, I'm so looking forward to seeing many lovely pics of your trip! I've never been to Hawaii, but love everything I have ever seen about it. I would absolutely prescribe a relaxing soak in those pools several times a day for your aching back... it's the best low-impact method to soothe aching body parts.
How long are you staying?

I'm getting busy busy at the house, getting rid of all kinds of junk that's accumulated over the last decade. then I'll be pulling up more carpeting, but first... work. later everyone!

Okay I purchased eggs :) Waiting on confirmation when they ship....wow it is a cycle...It all started with me sitting on my hands waiting for chicks...now I get to sit on my hands and wait for eggs. I also am thinking about getting my silkie a friend. Should I name her yet? I was so glad I hadnt named them when the one died...now I feel bad because I call her lonely
idunno.gif
just because she is inside and I don't want that to be her name.

W4W if any place can make you feel better, I think you have found it. Please take a ton of pictures especially of the wild chickens!

Showbarnmom that is some awful feet, that is all from mites? Beautiful guy though...he would make my husband laugh. I am itching to move someplace I could have a rooster.

Ok, you hanging in there?

my little Wrangler... who squats for Mylee?
Olive
Peach
Beulah
Merry and
Wilma
The whole flock is used to her bursts of sudden energy and spontaneous screaming and running. they don't scatter anymore. For the most part, she's imitating me, and being quiet and gentle which I really love, but I'm not kidding myself... she's 3, she cannot always be that way. the chickens are certainly faster than she is, they don't have to let her catch them... she's always got one or another in her arms... and if not, she has a cat.

Today we went to the Secret Caverns in Howes Cave NY. it's only about 10 miles away, one mile up from the Howes Caverns. I like the Secret Caverns better. it's smaller, but less commercialized... they have a neat underground waterfall... it's natural, but modernized, it can be turned on and off... but it's still really cool! the best pic...

and wouldn't you know it... Mylee found a big salamander down there, and she just had to rescue it and carry it up all 103 steps to the surface and set it free in the flowers. at least she listened to me and didn't kiss it.

and I took a picture of something that reminded me of how I met OK here on byc... the owner of the cavern put in a cement walkway at the bottom level, and raccoon got in through a grotto and walked all over the nice new cement.

oh yeah... broody Violet is doing well and the girls laid 14 eggs today
