I was just thinking, OMG is that a chicken coop or someone's house?! LOL!

Too Funny! As a matter of fact, our daughter was helping me out one day with putting in the trim and at one point she said, "Are you sure you want to put the hens in here because this coop is nicer than my house!"

So do they still defecate on the floor, too? Just wondering because I see roosts down below. I like your coop a lot! My coop is a mess right now. Really not very organized, but I will get it there.

They will defecate in the shavings, if they go in the coop during the day, but at night they are all up on the roost bar. So the majority of the droppings are in the PDZ. They just go up and down on the old roost, that you see. I only scraped it off so it still looks dirty. During the weekdays, they spend most of their time in the DL run. On weekends I have them out in our fenced yard all day. I haven't changed the shavings in 7 months, but I have added to them.

How deep is that PDZ?

aart, the PDZ is about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. The board is 24" x 11' it's about 2 bags of PDZ. I bought 5 damaged bags(real cheap) at TSC, they weren't quite full and I have a five gallon bucket of it left.

That's about what I started with, any deeper and they dust bathed in it, flinging it all over the place...haha! I've found tho that less than 1/2" works fine, just enough to keep most poops from sticking to the vinyl liner, but I sift all the pdz (and add a bit when needed) then level it out with my leveler.

Here's a picture of mine. Took an old kitchen table, lino tiles on top of that. Then framed with 2X4's. Painted it all for ease of cleaning and because sealed wood helps with mites, etc. (not porous for them to breed in). I used snow fence (wide holes) underneath the roosts to keep them from dust bathing and/or eating it. Hinge on the wall so I can lift it up, hook it, and scoop the poop every 2nd or 3rd day. Garbage can is on the bottom left. It's small, so gets full every 7-10 days and then I empty that directly into the garden during winter, in summer I put into the composter.

Everyone comments that my coop doesn't smell like a coop.

Looks great but my girls do a lot of kerfuffling before settling in for the night, sometimes pushing each other off the roosting bars. A bar fight, lol (sorry that was bad).
I will be the first to admit that I am a worry wart but I would imagine one of them getting tangled in the snow fence material.
BTW, I have never seen my chickens dust bathing in the PDZ but I guess it could happen. They've made a few dust baths of their own out in the run and I have a bin full of wood ash and dirt that they love but the PDZ in the poop trays never shows signs of any dust bathing.
They've sampled the PDZ too but it's not a favorite so they really don't chow down on it.

Mine was an after thought above the "nest box" (huge plastic dog house) with PDZ added. Works (only 4 BOs) but if I were to build another coop, it would be more elaborate

Mine are some OSB with the slick side up. I clean them with a 12" mud knife every morning... takes 30 seconds.

Orientated Strand Board, it's construction lumber some call it chip board it's cheaper than plywood usually. I would not use particle board (the one made from saw dust) for a poop board. And I only used it because it was leftover from building a shop so plenty of smaller pieces laying all over the place.
