I am close not being able to free-range anything right. Main dog just lost to car accident so I had to pen up everything except a few near house where remaining dog has more control. There a I got a hen and her late hatch daughter from last year leading a couple broods about together. They are never more than 50 feet apart. Two more hens will be coming off nest soon and I will not be able to have them out too because not enough area.
yeah I'd have feathers scattered across 8 acres if I turned them out

I have a question for you guys about feeding. My dad swears to just give all the birds full time feed. I disagree with this. I beleive that would be a waste of food. my chicks i give them as much feed as they want usually. Should i ration the chicks? How much feed per bird? I was talking a a cocker back east and he told me each bird only needs enough food to fill the inside of your fist with twice a day. Basicly enough ti fill their craw or whatevrr its called twice a day without it being bulged out huge. Is this about right? How much do you guys feed each sized bird each day? With my laying chickens they go through the feed a lot faster than my gamefowl.

Also i was able to find out the bloodline of the chicks i bought with my trio. They are both pure oscar akins lacy roundheads. Anyone ever heard of this bloodline? I think they are roughly a month old. Ill take a few pics in a little bit here to share with everyone. One looks like a cockeral for sure but the other is looking more like a hen. Would be awesome if they end up being a stag and pullet.

I also found a pure grey rooster a lady has for sale pretty close to me. My only hesitation is i find it hard to beleive this lady has ever tested the rooster for game. She only wants fifty dollars for him. He is on craigslist in the yuba sutter area. Check him out and let me know what you guys think. She wants fifty dollars for him. She doesnt know the bloodline either. She gets the birds from a guy who raises hundreds of them and gives them to her from time to time. He takes all his leg bands and wing bands off before she gets them so she has no idea what they really are and i get the feeling he is giving her his rejects which is not what i would want for breeding purpouses however. Im pretty new to this so there may be a few things im overlooking. So i asking for imput from fellow cockers

This is a good topic. I'm sure many have different opinions. For me chicks always have food 24/7. After all birds are on yard feed I give about 6-7 ounces of feed per day per bird. I use half pint feed cups. A little less for adult birds. I feed twice a day in cold winter months, with added whole corn with the second feeding before bed. Depending on breed layers can and will eat a lot more than gamefowl. Layers have full feeders in their coops 24/7 also. Some birds are totally different though. I have some that will eat as much as you give em, and some that barely eat it all. If I see they aren't eating all of it I'll cut that pen back some. I do things different than some guys though. I hate filling feeders and waterers and switch to cups as soon as I can. I give fresh water twice a day in summer. Once at night and then when I get home from work in the early afternoon. Winter it varies how cold, I break ice often. None of my birds are overweight so you can tell by feeling down between their legs if there's any extra fat on em.

Generally I don't think it's wise to ration young birds. It's frustrating how much they waste but I personally would rather them waste some feed then not get enough.
