its not terribly expensive to keep chickens alive, but it can get ridiculously expensive to properly care for them. Constantly cleaning pens, replacing straw, broken feeders, waterers, fixing pens, lumber, wire, and then you have feed. Pellets are fine but most chickens will do far better with a little more variety.
I also raise birds for feathers. The feed alone for them is almost prohibitively expensive. So even if you had the birds you might not get the same feather quality out of them.
It definately won't be an enjoyable experience if your having trouble paying for everything.

I have horses and I bale my own hay every year, so hay is not a concern. As for food, the feed around here is pretty cheep, not to mention I will be buying feed already for my other chickens. I also have enough wire to enclose a LARGE area, or lots of small ones. Now the food and water dishes might be a problem, it seems that some get broken every year, especially glass jars in winter(I switch from glass to plastic when winter comes, but it seem like it's never soon enough to save a few jars).

U always want to have a couple more pens that are vacant incase somebody dosnt want to have a roommate anymore for some reason one day also. I've had trios set up and it's like one day one hens wakes up just mad at the world and goes beating the other one. I and I would assume others don't want to discourage but we must advise walk cautiously because more often than not when an inexperienced person gets in over their head they have a tendency to blame the bird when the bird is doing what it was for lack of a better term invented for. These birds have one mission in life in their mind to kill the other that's ALL they live for

Yep doesn't help that I got another 3 inches of snow yesterday on the first day of spring. That's a nice slap in the face.

LOL I keep breaking my broodys too cold for chicks still. Prolapse hen has layed 3 eggs more eggs with no problems

That's good. A lot of times they just keep prolapsing til eventually they break an egg inside and end up dying.
