Economics. You do not just hatch any old time and care for immature birds during the show season. Birds that are mature by start of the first season are cheaper to raise to time of their first showing. Having to keep birds and additional year incurs a lot of feed and labor costs plus risk. I did the breeding year round as a kid, and learned to do better.

Well if your saving so much maybe you can come up with some better pens and roofs so you can keep them a little better and get more in return.
 
Yes sir! My crossed cocks top out in the low to high 4s which is perfect for what I want. Everything that I make earlier in the year average 5 to 5.12, them weights have to be the best of the best.
So are you inferring that birds later in the season don't come out as big as birds early in the season? If so, from which groups do you pick most of your broodfowl from? The early birds, or later birds? If that makes any sense lol
 
I think what he means is when it was legal anything that came 5+ was some real dang good/tough competition so your birds best be up to par.
