Yard full o' rocks :

My "mama" blue rock has been tending to her babies now for about 3 weeks +/-.....noticed she laid an egg in the brooder pen we have her and the 2 little ones in yesterday. Does that mean shes "done" playing mama??

I had a first time Silkie mama that laid an egg a couple weeks later. That is exactly what it meant in her case. She was done playing mama. She tolerated them, but that was it. I moved her back in with her former group.

Yup, the Delaware Diet is a nutritional weight loss plan that'll get you in shape, quick! You're always hungry Dels do all the work for you, gobbling up every last morsel of food you bring around them leaving you only with the tiniest crumbs. The end result? Your caloric intake drops considerably and the pounds just fall off!

How old are they? I had a younger one 12 weeks that was small but I just butchered the rangiest ones of mine and they were 3.5 to 4lbs lots of meat at 19 weeks and my feed store has a grower 13% protein and I used a lot of whole grains wheat and barley and some cracked corn with all my free bread they had just enough fat.

On my Dellies it was about 50/50 now my Marans are about 75/25 pullets...I'm hoping for a roo out of the NH's I just hatched no roos yet so you never know....

These guys were born at the end of march, so 16 wks end of the month. Picked one up last night and he doesn't seem all that fat. I'll Post pics. I am keeping one who had a nice comb, but these guys seem taller and skinnier than Nick my original WNY roo.
The hen from this batch seems rounder but I don't like her markings.

Do you weigh your birds before butchering? I can get 24% feed and some oats and of course corn. Should I put them by themselves to fatten them up? Could I just lock them up for the morning while they eat the fattening up food and then let the loose with the rest of the flock? I'm not really set up for a seperate "meat" section.

Ya know, Tim, I read somewhere (on BYC) that some feed stores sell a specific feed to fatten them up. I have not checked it any further. Maybe you could post the question over in the meaties section. I bet you would get good suggestions there.

I didn't weigh them first decided to weigh them cleaned that's what we eat anyways....I don't save necks, tails or any innards those are animal treats. I did feed mine game bird for a little bit but the feed man said that was a waste of money so I went with his 13% and what the local mill has for scratch no milo in it only wheat, barley and cracked corn and my bread. I penned them separate after 16 weeks because I took the keepers out...I liked the timing of this batch because you don't need much to keep them I clipped wings threw up a 3 ft fence gave them a small shelter for roosting and fed them all they will eat will butcher the last of them after this weekend it was 110 all this weekend so way too hot for me to process sorry to say it's leaving and coming east I hope it misses you it was nasty heat we even had a little rain very unusual for us

<snip> Serrin...I gotta agree with Cyn on Evie and Prius...looks like Columbian Rock in them to me. Hackles look more solid than barred and the "butt pictures" show a lot of slate grey looking fluff to me. Delawares "should" be white there, but Col Rocks have a slate grey undercolor. Neat looking birds nonetheless. I think "mixes" make some of the most interesting birds to look at.<snip>

Hey Scott, welcome back!

Thanks for the opinion. And I wholeheartedly agree. Reason #1: Delawares are a fairly rare breed, right? I mean, one is not that likely to see them offered at the average local TSC store, are they?

The nice folks that I got the eggs from have a mishmash of just about everything you can think of in their flock. But all of them that I recall, pretty much without exception, were all breeds that you would readily find in the average feed store. Your basic obligatory breeds like RIR, Orps, SL's, Bantams, and EE's. I've never seen anything so stand out exceptional as Dellies. Nor do I ever recall seeing CR's there either. But, about 2 or 3 years ago, they did have one smallish order of Light Brahmas in. (very low bred LB's at that!

) Is it possible that this is what is lurking in Evie and Prius?

Now, the reason that I think that might be the case, is that I know where Dawn and her DH got most of their flock from...and it was the same feed store that I did when I was first starting out. And I had a trio of those low bred LB's. Never did a single one of those birds ever develop feathers on their feet!

Very poor quality. I only caught a fleeting glimpse of the little white and black hen in their flock, but it sure looked like one of those poor quality LBs that I got from the feed store.

So, I'm thinking that she is probably the momma of Prius and Evie.

No matter what went into their makeup, I love both of them to pieces. They have such wonderful personalities.

It would just have been icing on the cake if they'd had Dellies in them somewhere. On a more positive note, they sort of led me into here, and now I know for certain that Delawares are on my list of must have new birds for next year!

I want some DELLIES!!!!

May I add to the above, Serrin- SDWD!!!!

Tim, I wish I could help you any on the roo weight thing- all I remember from when I had mine processed is that the man doing it said they needed about 4 -6 more weeks of growth/weight gain to make them really ready. They were good flavored birds, however. And now, of course, I can't even remember when I had it done. I think it was in March, however, because Buckshot died in early April, and it was before that. So they were about 4-41/2 months old, and the big one was close to 5 pounds.
