Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Many times, different breeds are crossed in to offset inbreeding or dwindling numbers in the breed. Hatcheries used Columbian Rock and I'm told, even some production reds. The problem was that there wasn't enough culling, IMO, to get back to type. To some folks, Columbian Rocks look just like Delawares, and of course, they really don't.

That would explain the small red feathers I see on him here and there!! O BOY! I got a mixed up bird!

No way am I gonna breed him with my Del girls. He's stew this weekend. He's not all that friendly but not nasty. No need in keeping him if I can't use him for breeding.Wait till ya'll see a picture of him though. Thanks speckledhen for the helpful info!

Watch this one...oh yes it will be just like my Cannonball in no time. Trust me about this. Cannonball would jump on your hand and hop up your arm with you trying to grab her...now at 10 weeks old she is a mess! She started young too....see the evidence

Watch carefully for these looks...they happen right before the launch

It starts young...look at this plotting thing only a few days old and starting her mind control stuff

7630_jailbirdcannonball.jpg

You open the door to the coop and she launches herself onto you, you try to leave and she is right there to go with you and if she does not get her way or wishes to get you to pay attention to her....you get this

7630_cannonballprotesting.jpg

and she is loud! Pray they never lose their grip when climbing. I will never go out to the garage in my jammies again because I am still recovering from a slipping Cannonball in which she decided to grab flesh with her beak and hang on to regain her balance. She has lauched herself into my plate of food and began mowing right through my dinner and one lunch. She has mysteriously appeared in the bathroom outside my shower yelling at me...having escaped the brooder by herself and I cannot count the times she has joined me in the livingroom, uninvited, to watch John Cena and Triple H on Monday Night Raw. She likes the bad boy type and her men big too.

So this is my warning to you about the arm climber you have...watch yourself woman it will take over and take control!

I am keeping little superchick in my prayers and hope he grows up to be a huge big boy like his daddy.

Having Dellies is an adventure. I cannot imagine having more than these two at one time...especially if they were like these two

LOL I felt it was my duty to warn her of what is coming.

afterthought: writing that book might not be a bad idea...you know to warn people about them. I could call it "The needs to know about living with Delawares" or "A Dellie owner's survival guide" or "Signs that your Dellie has taken control of your mind"

Cetawin and Kathyinmo-
I am flat on my back laughing and - I am in shock. My Dels are following so closely in the footsteps of yours that I wonder, like the dragons of Pern, if they go between space and time. They are all really the same evil Dels, sent to drive us mad. . . . .seriously, I think I have yours, or JamesA sneaked in and exchanged his week older babies for mine- I came home today and THEY ARE FLYING. Well, that's what it seems like . . . .They are a week old and they are all over the brooder. Launching into the air and flying/leaping over each others heads. They grew to twice their mornings size by the time I got home. I gave them yogurt and they mud wrestled in it. They look me in the eye when I talk to them, and that is just freaky!!!!! My DH says they got all excited when they heard my voice as I came up the porch steps.
So yes, they are friendly beyond any of my hopes or expectations, and yes, they are extremely alert and expressive.
I will buy the first copy of the book-

On a sadder note-Superchick in NOT growing yet. He and Baby Blue are now the smallest of the kids- I know they hatched last, but nothing seems to be happening - he is no better, no worse. Keep thinking nice things!!!!!!

Highspringschix- your babies look nice and round and good sized. I hear the smut molts out - I think Speckledhen said they do this?

Beth, Superchick is a mystery as to what's happening in its little body. It just may never thrive or it may suddenly decide to catch up to the others. It was a very large chick in that egg plus having its intestines not in place as they should have been and sometimes, those types just have things going on that no one can even begin to guess. You're doing a fantastic job of watching out for him and if he doesn't make it, it won't be for lack of trying on your part or ours.

I just realized something. I think your Superchick is like one of my babies... two actually, but mostly one. I had one out of a small egg that was, well, definitely the runt of the hatch. At 5 weeks old, he/she is the size and at the stage of barely a three week old while all the others sav one are getting much more progressed. It is still the baby, but is catching up kinda fast...ish.

ETS: I forgot to say that my chicks, named Paint Drip, breathing was a lit faster then the others. It was odd and still is

On a lighter note, I think that Delaware Owner Survival Guide/Book idea is wonderful! What an amazing idea! Can you imagine it sitting on the shelf between Chicken Care 101 and Rare Breed Guide? Oh man, that would be great!!!!

Cute babies, highspringchix. I cannot wait for Spring. I'll be hatching some Delawares from my girls and boy. Man I am so EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Cetawin, those are cute pictures and a funny story. I always have a good laugh when I come to this page.

Good night everyone! Dela.

-Order of the Delaware- Bahaha!

They do fly I swear they do. And they are so intense in everything they do...I gave mine yogurt ONCE and I was washing both of those babies afterwards.

They do look at you intently when you talk to them and they carry an expression on their faces like "yes silly human woman I will control you just give me time but i love you

"

I am sorry Superchick is not doing better but like Cyn said, if he fails it will not be for lack of trying to help him. It is really up to him now. You say baby blue so I am sure you are talking about a little suede baby. Do not worry if s/he is small now. My blue girl was struggling so long and tried to pip for hours finally, I pipped the egg for her and when she hatched, she was small like my Cannonball....this is her at hatch and Monday

See her by the waterer and all the big babies around her Cannonball is the little dellie beside her to the left

Your blue baby will catch up and pass the others soon enough.
