Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Oh dear- I don't fit in.

I lOVE hens- they are so sweet! I WANT to love the roos, and I DO love Buckshot and Ultrasuede, but Ultrasuede is still skittish and Buckshot watches what happens with Delzilla, and gives me the wild eye and disappears around the corner. The nicest roo is Colombo, who is one of the two you know whats that won't be staying.

RWoman, did you really throw water on him? And what do you do with the net? Drop it over their heads?

Beth, she is still sitting the eggs. She was off for a very long time today, pooped outside when I opened the door for her because she was pacing, then went back in and sat beside the eggs.

In awhile, she did get back on them and snuggled them underneath her. She's making me crazy today!

Well, maybe she had to talk herself into it? I still have my fingers crossed

On a Dellie note- after much thought, I decided my approach to Delzilla was all wrong. I was getting tense and going out to the coop in a defensive mode. And besides, if I call him Delzilla, think of him as Delzilla and EXPECT Delzilla behavior out of him, why should I be surprised that he IS a Dellzilla? I also decided to keep my fingers hidden, as that is what he eyeballs all the time. Voila!!!!

He has a tenor crow, very beautiful and full, so I rechristened him Luciano, and I kept my fingers out of sight. He looked at my jacket sleeve, looked at me and NOTHING HAPPENED. I lifted him up and stroked his little chest and neck, told him he was Luciano, and beautiful, and put him down and he went off to eat.

Maybe he thought my fingers were big, fat juicy worms? Maybe he felt my tension and decided it was combat time? I don't know- but we'll see if this works. I've been out with them for most of the morning, and he has not tried to bite again- He hung closely around me with the rest of them, letting me stroke his back or chest. However, I am doing it with the jacket sleeve and keeping my fingers out of his sight for a while yet.

IN ADDITION, if you all will put up with my silly novice chicken "O wow guess what happened" mindlessness - I sat down on the shavings bag with Lizzie in my lap and started humming some bits and pieces of tenor opera arias and after an initial silence, ALL THE ROOS STARTED TO CROW. I don't know if they were joining in, complaining about my voice, or if they decided it was a competition, but I thought I would DIE. And the biggest kick- I finally got to hear Ultrasuede crow. And he is a countertenor!!!!

OK, I am back in chicken heaven!

Wow, that's some real progress, Beth! You should be a chicken psychologist. I let the girls out with Isaac today for a few minutes. He mated at least two of them, then Phoebe discovered the new grass coming in from the seed we put out weeks ago and started chowing down. That cut their session short, LOL.

Good for Isaac!!! You'll get those eggs out yet- I need to get some good pics of my hens for you - I think you can be really proud of the bunch I have, Cynthia- I got looking at them today and they are starting to look mature, less gangly, and some of the hens are SO pretty! It's hard to count points on their little combs, yet, but I think I have a few five pointers in there.

I don't know about chicken psychologist- I just needed to screw my head back on and remember how much my other kids (horses, dogs and cats) respond to my moods and tone of voice - keep your fingers crossed for me!

Ultrasuede sat in my lap for a few minutes-

Beth, they are not sweet they are prissy "DON'T TOUCH ME bbbbbooooookkkkkkkkk" "GO AWAY" "DIE HUMAN DIE (insert major stinkeye here)" type birds. Go for the Ameraucana for sweet....go for the Dellie for sweet but not the blue orp. Get Ultrasuede big BUFF orps for sweet.

Yes. And now after reading how good you were about going out and braving your roo I feel terrible
He is only doing his job protecting his ladies
Sometimes the red hair takes over
I use the net to catch and move birds where I want them running back and forth in the coop and outside takes to much time. So I net them, hold them down and then take them out and talk to them

Maybe a SPLASH orp hen????

Athena is just jealous over your feelings for Thor!

Germaine- don't feel bad, I have lost it at the horses a time or two, that's how I remembered to remember how much they read off my moods! That net idea could come in handy, though, if I have to get someone out of the coop!
