Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I was seriously thinking about keeping Stewart and Quasi inside tonight in a pet carrier. Thanks for the tips about bait, I'll try cat food and I think I'll throw a few eggs in there too. Evidently my hen didn't fill the killer up because ALL of the eggs from today were either gone or smashed up in the nest boxes, so the thing was brave enough to go inside my coop.

I'm going to make sure every lock is locked and every window is shut tonight. Then I'm putting the live trap right next to the coop. Whatever happens to get caught will wish it never messed with my chickens.

Jeremy, this sounds very much like a hawk attack. If that's the case, you can only follow the instructions another BYC member once gave on that subject. Employ the 3 "S" 's:

Shoot
Shovel
and Shut-up!

As for baiting raccoons, I've found that plain old canned dog food works wonderfully!

Cetawin. My dear friend, words cannot even begin to express my sorrow at hearing that Thor has passed from this world.

And in my book, there's no such thing as "just" a rooster. Even the bad ones are extraordinary creatures. More personality gets poured into every ounce of their bodies and being than any five hens. Thor was no exception to this. In fact, I'd venture to say that he was endowed with double the normal personality dose that the so called "average" rooster is hatched with. He will be so very sorely missed, and not just by you and your family. Though I know you will feel his loss most keenly of all, there are more than a few of us out here that cried their eyes out today at the news of Thor's passing. Yours truly included and I'm not in the least bit ashamed to admit that!

Thor was a very, very special young man. To be sure, he has been taken from us far too soon. But as has been said before, [I believe Cyn said it best] sometimes, some of these little souls are just too precious for this world. No, there will never be another like him anywhere. But there will be other roosters that you can still love. I hope and pray for you my friend, that somewhere in that incubator of yours, there is another special little man, just waiting to hatch and fill your world with love and companionship.

Hang in there sweetie. I'll be calling you tomorrow. It's probably way past your bedtime now, so I'll wait for a more appropriate time.

I really and truly am heartsick at your loss.

Thank you for the kind words about Thor. I sure miss him

Cetawin...........I am so deeply sorry you lost Thor. I've read about him here, that I feel like I knew him. He was not "just a rooster".

Jeremy and Kathy......I'm so sorry for your losses also.

Thank you New2Chooks. He was special for sure. I am worrying about Cannonball...That Delaware is mourning bigtime....

When Cheyenne found Thor, she said Cannonball was lying on the floor next to him and she followed Cheyenne carrying Thor to the house. Then she walked and screamed for him all day. So, I just got home and smelled a strong smell of skunk so I went to check on everyone...They are all safe and secure but...

Cannonball is sitting on the floor where Thor fell, all alone, just sitting there.

I am going to watch her carefully and make sure she is eating and drinking. She is really having a hard time with Thor gone...as much as I am.

Oh Cannonball, you sweet thing- I hope she will take heart and keep going!
I thought about all our losses all night-

Jeremy, all the eggs getting smashed makes me think something went on a rampage in there- either chasing your chicken all over the place, or being wantonly destructive. Do you have mink or weasles around? Skunk?

Isaac's toe looks like it's well on the mend! He may be able to go back outside soon.

I'm so glad he is such a friendly guy--him jumping up on the roost to say hi to me was when I noticed it was going downhill.

Poor Cannonball.
