Sick SLW- 7 months old- nothing is helping

I have been reading all evening online about what drugs treat enteritis best, and there are so many studies that talk about this drug working or not doing so well, but no one says what is best. Tylan is one that can be used on respiratory as well as enteritis, according to some studies on C.perfringens in enteritis. That actually might be good to use.
That is interesting! I thought Tylan was strictly for respiratory. Well, I guess any drug is not strictly for... anything. I wonder if it works for E.Coli? I've got Tylan on hand. I'll do some digging around to see about that and in the mean time I will call the state vet... thanks for the info!

I was also surprised to see that in the literature I looked up for "drugs to treat c.perfringens in chickens.". Neomycin is good for the E.coli and C.perfringens, so it would be tempting togive both. Michael Apple is on here a lot, and I think he has actual experience treating some of these things. You might PM him--I think he loves a challenge.

I would think the Tylan injectables would work as the long she is isn't to far gone. It will be interesting to see what the state vet says.

One of our turks succumbed to pulmonary E. Coli (extremely heavy rain pretty much atomized run surface and the tom refused to go in shed - so inhaled the mist). This is the drug susceptibility table of the necroscopy report from the VetPathLab at MU: (S- Susceptible) (I - intermediate) (R - Resistant):

Great example of the whole problem of antibiotic resistance, and of the problem with giving antibiotics without knowing which one would be effective.

So then would you switch her today to the Tylan? Regard less I've got 20 minutes before the state lab opens and will call to get this ball rolling. I want to save her so bad! But, hey she made it through another night!!! Thank goodness!

The above chart shows E.coli drug resistance. The Tylan was to treat clostridium perfringens in necrotic enteritis, in which some studies said worked. Many drugs treat this--this is a drug she has at home already. She thought her chicken had liver problems. I later thought she might have E.coli sepsis because her chicken has just developed some eye swelling, but has become very ill with dark spots on the legs, yellow coloring of the comb and skin, blood in stools last week. The Neomycin was suggested for the E.Coli, but it would be best to know what exactly is wrong, I agree, so that is why I suggested the state vet.

I was under the impression that Tylan was more of a gram positive antibiotic and probably useless against e.Coli. Would be best to have a vet do a gram stain and have them advise.
