Hi everyone!

I am a first time owner of 4 chicks (about 5 weeks/6 weeks), and I was really excited for these silkies. I thought I was very prepared, but I noticed some blood in the chicks poop. I quickly researched and believe they have coccidiosis. It’s been a day since I found blood in their poop. I went to the Tractor Supply store and bought Corid. Research has said 1tsp per gallon of water and keep that as their only source of drinking water. I am a bit worried this will not work since they already have some blood in their poop. I was thinking of hand feeding (syringe) with the corid drinking water from the gallon so I know they are actually drinking the water. Does anyone else have some advice on what I can do?! I really want to take care of these little silkies

Correct dose of Corid is 1 & 1/2 tsp of the powder or 2 tsp of the liquid per gallon of water. Under-dosing can result in treatment failing. Start over with the correct dose and treat for the full 5 - 7 days. For any that you know are passing blood or are showing any other symptoms like lethargy or not eating or drinking well, give them an oral dose once a day for up to 3 days in addition to the medicated water. Instructions for dosing that are here:

Corid is very safe, you do not need to worry about too much. You can also give any that aren't drinking some of the medicated water several times a day until they start drinking on their own, the medication has to get in them to work.
If you have never given oral medication before, this link tells how to do it safely:

How do they seem? Can you post pictures of the poop? There are times when seeing a small amount of what looks like blood is normal. This chart is gross, but informative about it.

Here is corid dosage info and drench info. If they look like they have normal energy levels in the water should suffice.

Hi! Thanks so much for the reply. I’m really worried and want them to be okay. This was my first time having chicks so I still have a lot to learn. Thank you for the information you sent! I have posted some pictures of their poop this morning before I cleaned it. It doesn’t look too good :( however, not every dropping contains blood. Some look very normal, and then some don’t. I have 4 chicks and they’re all separated at the moment because I want to monitor each one. They all are being treated for coccidiosis

Thanks so much for this! In my initial paragraph, I forgot to mention that they do have energy and are drinking/eating on their own. It looks like the blood in their poop is the only symptom at the moment. I hope I caught to fast enough to start the treatment!

That they are all acting fine is a very good sign. It's hard to tell in that picture if it's intestinal shed, blood, or both. But there is a lot of it, and it looks a bit redder than shed, so I would go ahead and treat. Corid is very safe, and it's better safe than sorry. If they were mine, I would treat. Coccidiosis can sometimes progress rapidly, so starting as soon as possible often makes the biggest difference in recovery. Make sure it's the only water they have access to, and don't give any vitamin supplements that contain thiamine during treatment, that can reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Great! Thanks! I started their treatment. I’m hoping the blood goes away and they continue to have the energy they have now. They seem very strong right now, but I don’t want to take any chances! I would also rather be safe than sorry

This is how I learned, too. I read a lot before we got them, but you can't read everything, so some of it has to be learned as you go.
