Silver Laced Wyandotte sexing

Pics
Ok thanks everyone for your help. I guess we will just have to wait and see if it crows. Will be a shame cos will have to rehome very pretty bird

Sorry that you can't keep him! The good news is that wyandottes are pretty slow to mature. Mine don't usually start crowing until they get to be about 5-6 months old. You should be able to confirm gender when the saddle feathers start coming in and still have a bit of time to find him a new home before he starts crowing and gets you in trouble.

Thanks. We were given it as a day old chick being told from feather sexing it was a hen. But that's ok we still have a few months left like you said till he annoys the neighbours and we will make sure he goes to a great home.

Hi!

We have 7 SLW chicks (hatched 1/7/15) supposedly pullets. 5 are quite small, no tail feathers. Two are nearly twice as big, and have about 1/2" of tail growth... What might this be about?

Hahaha I got the same feeling. I guess just wait till they crow if they dont then they are hens. It's the first time I've ever had a silver laced Wyandotte so I have zero idea. So Im no help to you either.

It's possible that the larger ones are cockerels but it's just as possible that they are just growing at different rates. Unless they were purchased as straight run, I wouldn't even worry about it yet. It'll be about another month before you'll really be able to tell their genders. Enjoy them while they are small and adorable :) I can usually sex my wyandottes at 6-8 weeks old.

Sorry, I'm still saying cockerel on this one. My girls are 6 months old and just starting to lay and their combs aren't that big and well defined.

I'm just going to wait it will be whatever it will be. It was also slow to develop so I wouldn't say that is away to define if they are boys or girls. I've just seen photos of the parents and the mother has a big comb (bigger then my chicks) so maybe we breed them different over her in Australia. Thanks for all your help I'll be sure to update a photo once I know forsure what it is.
