How are they for confinement? I don't free range, and don't plan to. I have about 150 sf in my run, and currently 3 hens, 3 pullets, and 1 roo.

I looked at the hatchery that the local TSC uses. This is what they have:

"Townline’s Pearl Star Leghorns are imported from the Czech Republic and are a cross between Partridge Rocks and Sussex."

Why does that sound like it's not a Leghorn? 🤦‍♀️

Hi Sally! I have a Pearl star. It isn’t a leghorn at all but I have one and she is my absolute favorite girl. She was my first layer of her class and is very sweet and dependable. C3CD4654-A424-4078-AFB7-9DD6E06CE4FA.png

Mine is fine with confinement, but she especially loves the perches and things that I have for them to hop on. She likes being up high and jumping around, and has never seemed unhappy with confinement. If you just have a big, empty square, though, it might be a different story.

I have a lot of clutter. Not much stuff up high, but I can add that, easily. Since I have Orpingtons, Jersey Giants, and Australorps, I kept stuff at the 16-20" on purpose. The main roost is higher, but they can get up or down in steps.

Lots of time before next spring, when the chick urge will be upon me! :)

Even without adding anything, just rearranging can be fun every once in a while, because it’s ‘new’!

I’d like to give into the chick fever this year! I’m hoping to get a run extension for a Christmas present, so that I can add next spring. I’d either do 2 standards or 3 bantams- even with extra run space, my coop is a bit small. I’d have to time it with my friends, though, because it’s too small an order to stand on it’s own.

Yes! When I took down the dividing fence at the end of "look, don't touch" integration, I rearranges just about everything, so it was new for everyone.

I may do that again soon. It was fun to watch everyone come out and look around. The "what happened?!?...." look was on all their faces.

I personally don’t like the coloring of light browns, but dark browns? *chef’s kiss*

Tillie has always stayed white, aside from when she got Vaseline on her feathers (long story) and dirt stuck to it and stained her somehow.

I don’t have any of those, but I’ve never heard of any breeds not getting along aside from warring roosters, and non crested or smooth feathered birds picking on crested birds, or frizzled or silkied birds.
My Daisy, the greatest hen ever, kept herself pretty darn white, except during the rain.

Because it's not a leghorn. @GrandmaDeKorte keeps hers confined. Perhaps she could weigh in.

I will say this. Mine have all been smart, curious, and able to fly. I mean really fly. I have seen them called escape artists and those attributes would have you think so. You do have plenty of run space for a couple.

Tillie shows off her flying ability by flying across the yard to get treats to get there before those other *losers* that have to run lol
She also tried to climb a ladder to the roof, once- they’re really something!
