I have 2 silkies, I was hoping they were girls for some broodies, but no they are both roos
It took a while to figure out what they were though, one crowed about 5 months the other took till about 7 months to start crowing. I cant even give them away around here, and I have too many roos!
You all are crazy if you can't eat a Silkie because of their coloring! They are considered a delicacy to East Asians, and like someone mentioned they're supposed to have healing properties. So, they are little different. So what. If they aren't laying, then you don't even have eggs for them to brood on! And how many other breeds' eggs can one Silkie set on? 2? Maybe 3?
That all being said, my little black girl, who is the oldest girl I have beside the 2 Welsummers, JUST started laying in the last week, she is almost 9 months old. So, I think they will lay when they lay and you be happy with that, or you don't keep the cute little fluff muffins.
Really, this time of year you can't even discuss laying habits. I have 50 girls and I get 1 or 2 eggs a day an one it the Silkie and the other is a little pullet egg that I haven't figured out who it is from but maybe one of the Wyandottes.
I had to restart my flock last spring after my dogs took out the ones I had, so everyone is bit young anyway.
Well, It sounds like you have two pullets who are holding out, so I would wait, the work to process them is a waste of time unless you are just dying to try their dark, dark meat.
I wonder if you make stock with their black/blue bones if the stock will be black or blue. Hmm. I might have to have an experiment when I get too many roos.

The pigment isn't soulable. It's a pigment that is within the collagenous tissues so bones, ligaments, skin and the stuff holding muscle together is dark. Sorry to break it to you, but silkie soup is just like any other soup. Of course, unless you're like my mom and all her who swear the female silkies have more healing powers. I can sell a silkie live to people for medicinal soup for as much as I can sell them as a pet!
