I will have help - I don't know how much I can actually TAKE - OK I eat liver (GROSS I KNOW) but the one night I actually COOKED it myself and saw it raw - I couldn't eat it! So I might actually not be able to eat my own chickens .... I don't know.

I worked with a waitress once at an Italian restaurant, when asked for suggestions she would suggest anything without meat and go on a rant about being vegetarian and how cruel it was to eat meat etc etc.
My sister in law came in my house once and saw my house rabbit a big white fat rabbit and offered to kill him for me!
The same sister in law just came over and saw the baby chicks and asked when we would be killing them!
Another person stopped at the front gate and asked if my ducks laid eggs and did I sell them, but could I put them in cartons so her husband would think they came from the store and were odd looking chicken eggs!
People see things so differently, but that is what makes the world go 'round!

This wouldn't be SO funny if it weren't SO true!

At my last job, I'd brought a dozen eggs for a lady that sat next to me. She had forgotten them like, 2 days in a row and I got tired of reminding her...then I realized that the following day the fridge was getting cleaned out and anything in there would be thrown away.

So, I asked a gal that was sitting on a different row if she wanted some FREE eggs. She said, "YES!" after I told her they were from my chickens = fresh!

When she came in the next day she approached me asking how long the eggs were in the fridge? I said only 2 days...why? She said that she thought a couple of them had gone bad since they were blue and she was going to throw them!

GONE BAD?

I had the hardest time explaining to her the whole "the shell is blue but the eggs are the same inside..." She was still convinced they were rotten! I told her to crack one in a bowl "tomorrow" to see.

Next day she just smiled at me and said, "You were right! Now my kids want NOTHING but blue eggs!"

I was around my grandparents big farm a lot as a kid, so I wasn't that far removed. Yet I thought brown chickens laid brown eggs and white chickens laid white eggs, because grandma had white and brown eggs from those white and brown chickens.

Well here's some surprising info from citychickens.com

"The feed store suppliers are usually able to sex the chicks and provide mainly hens for laying eggs. They do this by examining the shape of the egg. This process is about 95% accurate."

Gee, that sure would make hatching a bunch of pullets easier. I'd take 95% accuracy.

That's the thing. The eggs I gave her had mostly brown eggs, a couple white and 3 blues. Funny, she didn't think anything of the brown eggs. I guess anything that was not "Earth" hued was *rotten*.

Thats hilarious, I'm 23 and none of my friends understand what I am raising chickens. My older sisters wont eat my chickens eggs cause the chickens freerange and forage for roaches and other bugs. I tried to explain to them that all that protein is what makes the eggs so much richer in color and texture than those watery pale store bought eggs, but they'll hear none of it.

Some of my friends are veggheads and start gettin pushy with their beliefs and all that. I just retort with my own beliefs, mostly because i like a good debate, or the more informal argument.

People are so disconnected with their foodsource. Its really unfortunate too. Eating food you've cultivated, or raised, has to be one of the most rewarding experiences. After learning how to sprout seedlings in elementary school, I went home and planted 6 tomatoe plants, with fresh seeds. I musta been 7 or 8. Since those first fresh tomatoe slices over letuce, I've been hooked on growing. I almost wish everyone could connect with the earth the way I have.
