some think that gun laws are unconstitutional

Still, that's not a bad idea. Imagine this conversation:

"Mr. President, the vast majority of the American people feel that this (insert bill here) is a massive violation of the Constitution."

*Fictional president* "Who cares what they think?"

"Oh, and most of the population owns an automatic military weapon."

"..."

Really an M-60 jams to much? have you spent alot of time firing one? or ever fired one? Just a quick test withou tyou going to look it up, how would you replace the barrel after you fired a couple hundred rounds? How many pins hold the butt stock in place? And how many positions are in the bi pod? My M-60 didn't have jamming issues at all.

Steve

See? This is what happens when I put too much stock in Military Channel shows! I end up saying things that aren't true!

Don't worry, I don't get most of my info from places like that - I typically go with reviews by people who actually use them. I'm trying to learn the basics of assault rifles and such. Forgive me for being a little ignorant of the specifics - the "gun bug" just bit me this year.

This makes me think of the movie "Red Dawn".

My only objection to registration is that only law abiding citizens will register, the criminals certainly won't. So what's the point?

If you are young enough and in NC take a short trip to SC there is a small resort called Paris Island filled with helpfull and well meaning teachers. They can teach all you need to know about weapons and things that go boom and then you can go off to "college" in a high mountain land and play with the experts. Hands on experience is always the best teacher not TV .

The right of the people shall not be infringed................How hard is it to understand. I was taught firearm safety from my Dad, Grandfathers and Uncles. Even in Cub Scouts we all took our .22s on camping trips and had superviesed target contests. Can you imagine the legal reprecussions today, letting a bunch of 9 yr olds shoot real guns. My daughter shot her first gun at 7 yrs. A .30 Ruger Black Hawk. I am getting ready to let my grandson shoot his first gun. I believe that every American (sane) should have a knowledge of shooting. Oh, and beware the man who has one gun, he probably knows how to use it. (I can't remember who the quote was from) I forgot to mention that the only time an M-60 jammed on me is when the shell casing was not held in place by the link clip that went between the bottom rim and the casing body.

"....a well regulated millitia". After all regulations are laws. I've met members of "unorganized millitias" before, but never a member of a well regulated millitia. Then it says "... to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"

On could interpret that the regulations have to do with firearm owners being responsible for condition, safety, storage and uses of said firearms. I'd back that up.

I think Ed Abbey said it pretty well for me: (something like) "The only thing stupider then not carrying a firearm in the desert, is carrying one in plain sight."

peace!

Actually, in those days, well-regulated meant "well-disciplined" or "organized." The British Army was "well-regulated."

I believe it was James Madison who once said, "What is the militia? It is the whole people." [emphasis added]

Patrick Henry: "The great object is that every man be armed. Everyone who is able may have a gun."

Below is a link with tons of quotes from the Founders.

Here in the socialist state of Illinois, we need to have a Firearms Owners Identification Card. (FOID) You apply to the State Police to get the card. You must have the card to purchase or possess any firearm or ammo. Having a single round of live ammo without a valid FOID card is a felony in this state.

You also need the FOID card to purchase/possess a high power pellet gun (over 700 fps). We still have waiting periods; 24 for long guns and 72 hours for handguns.

This is also one of the two states that does not allow concealed carry.

I know - it's something of a sound bite that has stuck with me. I actually saw it years ago, and aside from that have read/seen nothing about the M-60. The AK-47 or SKS, on the other hand, I have spent a LOT of time studying. Not the specifics, but the overall pros/cons, range and whatnot.

BTW, we don't have the Military Channel, I saw it at another home. Trust me, I usually don't trust TV. After I posted I thought, "You know, that's probably gonna make me look stupid."

I was right.

Paris Island - training area for the Marines, isn't it? Or is it the Army?

I am often confused by the argument. One comment on here even said there might be people who haven't been taught how to handle a gun..... many if not most of my friends and coworkers have never so much as held a gun. Gun issues in Wyoming are not the same as gun issues in Chicago.

The issues are usually not in the owners - they are with the sellers and who they sell to. You have to get a license and pass a course to drive you should have to do the same to own a gun.

BUT FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY you should have to do more to be able to sell guns. One of the major flaws in the so-called system is gun shows. Gun shows are cool and lots of fun, but why are so many regs by-passed at gun shows??

You should be able to buy and own as many guns as you can afford. As long as you have a license.

But, some local areas should be able to respond to local problems with local restrictions. That is why we are these united states, so states could respond to local issues locally.

The argument that says if we restrict guns only criminals will have guns is true only in as much as we are having problems not with owning but with selling.
All of those guns came from somewhere and very few of them come from out of the country.
