Just the other day I told my DD to spread her bed. She said, and I quote "What is that?"

Also there's laripin', as in fried catfish is laripin' good!

And what good southern kid hasn't tied a thread to the leg of a june bug and flown it around. Or captured a jar of lightnin' bugs to put beside the bed at night. And who hasn't fished with catalpa worms... Or in the spring begged until their momma said they could go barefoot. Had a rock skippin' contest with their cousins. Used canned biscuit dough to catch "sun perch" to use as trotline bait. Gone for a week with purple thumbs after shelling purple hull peas.

Or sat in a metal porch chair and rocked, or swang on the porch swing listenin' to the crickets and frogs and enjoyin' the night air.

Who hasn't cranked their arm off making "homemade ice cream" the kind with the crank and salt on ice.... Or drawn a bucket of water up from the well and passed the dipper around for a drink. Worn cutoffs, blue jeans with the legs cut off, before it was "cool". Or played outside until your Mom just "made" you come in.....

I miss lightnin bugs. And camping when it's warm out. Even when it's 90 here it dips to 50 or 60 at night.
I miss good thunderstorms that you can watch from the porch.
I miss the march of the turtles across the highway during their breeding season.

This year I am seeing lots of lightening bugs but no June Bugs. We have had alot of rain so that might be a reason. I know ticks are way down from last year also.

One we have not mentioned even though i know they are not totaly southern but are mostly. Crawdads.

Texas isn't Southern, sorry to say... it is a world unto it's own. Oklahoma is also excluded; it is the land of Okies and is solely unique.

Them is fightin words - Yes, south Florida but North Florida is very southern

My Grandfather was a range rider and worked cattle all over the state in the 1920's

On a warm summer's night visiting my parents in Alabama, My wife(Born and bred California girl) said, "Oh-Look! they have their christmas lights on all year!"...I said, "No, sweety, those are lightning bugs..."

My Dad was riding in the car with us, It sounded like he was choking to death while Step mom was gouging him in the ribs giving him the stink eye.
