Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Caleb, the reason I suggested seeing if there is egg on their face is because some of my hens lay soft shelled eggs every once in awhile and when they do, they eat them. I always know who did as they ALWAYS have egg on their face somewhere afterwards. But then again, I am out with them a lot of the time, so maybe I catch them before it flakes off or gets washed away. I am pretty in tune with what's going on out there most of the time.

I know why you had to kill that raccoon and def would not want her around my coop, but I must be the only one feeling sorry for her. Especially knowing she had young ones to feed. I know it's part of the process of keeping chickens, you have to protect them and you did what you had to do. But it still saddens me. I'm such an incredible softy! I always fantasize about getting meat birds and raising them but when it came to killing time, I'd be such a mess, I'm not sure I could do it. I'm glad you got her before she killed any birds.

We are getting drenched here today at the southern tip of nys. My gardens love this rain and it looks like they are perking up already. DH dug out another plot for me along our stone wall......and we are using existing bricks that have been here forever to outline/edge them. Yesterday pumpkins and watermelons went into the ground finally. My rhubarb is taking hold.... and kale is growing strong along with comfry and arugala. my chickensespecially love the kale and run to it when i let them out for a forage each day.
Baby robins and blue jays are fledging from their nests and following their parents around begging to be fed out on the grass.
I love having a nice spring for a change rather than jumping into a hot summer immediatey.Mother nature at her best. Hope everyone has a productive day!

A pic of my mille fluer banties opnce upon a time.

Your not alone feeling like a softy. I do too.:<) I myself cant kill either......but fully understand the need to for safety and food. Thats just what makes us all individuals and human.

Agreed! I can't stand coons, but my husband is going to borrow a hav-a-heart raccoon trap to relocate the ones in our yard. I have a list of deserving people...

(Kidding-we'll take them to the pine barrens.) BUT-if one were to be around my house, active in daylight, I do admit, I'd be VERY able to kill it. Raccoons around here have been found with rabies. I'd feel no remorse for that-threaten my family's health, and all bets are off.

Ahem.... I live in the pine barrens.
We used to relocate them, too.
But after you see the massacres they can do, you will understand.
I realize everyone has to eat, but sometimes they just go on a killing spree, and I know people that have come home, or woke up to a dozen or so headless bodies.
Paybacks.

Ooops! Sorry! Ok, forget the pine barrens. How about the Hamptons?

You're right though-they killed my flock years ago.I wish it had just been headless bodies. Right now, all they do is knock over garbage pails, and steal the cat that adopted us's food. Once the girls are out at night, my goal is to keep them safe. However it has to be done. They are so nasty, and the thing that makes me nuts is that-they don't back down or run away!!!

Those were from 4 years ago or so. I gave up on bantams and they went as pairs to new homes. They were adorable! I had 3 pairs and an eatra pullet. No problem finding those cuties homes because they were so darn small.LOL

Yes, i have tons of racoons here and possums. I am frantic and dream/fear that I forgot to close my girls down tight at nite. I had a coon take a bird piece by piece out of a run through the wire once during the nite. I was traumatized the next morning and have felt the guilt ever since. They all are behind triple lock door/ coop at nite now. I dont ever want to see that again. ugh
