Caleb, the reason I suggested seeing if there is egg on their face is because some of my hens lay soft shelled eggs every once in awhile and when they do, they eat them. I always know who did as they ALWAYS have egg on their face somewhere afterwards. But then again, I am out with them a lot of the time, so maybe I catch them before it flakes off or gets washed away. I am pretty in tune with what's going on out there most of the time.
I know why you had to kill that raccoon and def would not want her around my coop, but I must be the only one feeling sorry for her. Especially knowing she had young ones to feed. I know it's part of the process of keeping chickens, you have to protect them and you did what you had to do. But it still saddens me. I'm such an incredible softy! I always fantasize about getting meat birds and raising them but when it came to killing time, I'd be such a mess, I'm not sure I could do it. I'm glad you got her before she killed any birds.
