Hail storm just moving through. This has been the month of crazy weather. The 11 babies got out of the cozy coop and it was something rounding them up before the storm hit.I need to go buy a fish net tomorrow. You'd think I was killing them when I caught them.

This sounds like heat stroke, not just standard dehydration. At minimum it was heat exhaustion. Dehydration is the decrease in fliuds, heat exhaustion is a body temp up to 104, stoke is over 104 degrees. It can cause neurologic symptoms and can be fatal. If it was heat stroke you are fortunate to have survived. Please go to the doc asap to be checked for your hydration status and as was pointed out, your eletrolyte levels. Severe dehydration is a very dangerous thing and is often the cause of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, but you can have them without dehydration as well (activity during really hot weather sufficient to cause your temp to go over 104).
I think you might be right. I have never felt like this before. What really freaked me out was my hands and my speech. Scary. I'm going to go to the doctor first thing tomorrow-I've been pretty much staying inside since the heat is so bad. I did let the girls out this afternoon, pretty early, and they were so good, just staying around the bushes by the pen, dirt bathing under there, then just hanging out. When I heard thunder about an hour ago, I went out to check them, and they were already in the pen, waiting for me to close it. Such good girls.

My sons were all ready to herd them into the pen, so they were rather enamored with the girls too.

My older son asked how I slept last night, I had been tossing and turning, I told him. he said "You probably had chickens on your mind".

What can I say? The boy knows me...

I heard there was possible hail coming. My husband just got home, and he was on his bike. I'm glad he missed it!!

My little ones are treat trained, so if I really need them in their pen rather quickly, I just get out the worms and kneel down. I find myself covered in chickens pretty fast!!!

Say hi to Nutmeg everyone! Silver laced bantam PULLET from Clark Farms in Higganum, CT. Chipmunk crowed for the first time today and I did get it on video, so it was bittersweet to say goodbye to him. The Clarks were very nice and have lots of different breeds; they were real excited to see Chipmunk's feathered feet and I think he'll be adding to the genetic mix of their flock. I handed over a roo and picked up a pullet for $20 and a nice drive in the country. Also we stopped at Shake Shack in Westport mostly to see what the fuss is about. I took Chipmunk out of the trunk and put him in the shade while we ate and when we came back to the car he had a whole fan club going. Spreading chicken luv! The only thing I feel awful about is poor Tiana, Chipmunk's big sister. I put her in the isolation area with Nutmeg and she is cheeping hysterically trying to get into the main coop. I think she is looking for her baby brother still. Hopefully she'll just adopt Nutmeg like she took on Chip.

Heather, that website's owner is part of "Hudson Valley Chickens" group on yahoo.....of which I also subscribe. Nice group of people....always willing to help with advice. They hold sales/gatherings upstate along the hudson valley area. Even Tractor Supply allows them to use their parking lot as a kinda farm/animal/fresh food flea marke sale a couple times a year. Lots of hands on knowledge. you'd enjoy it I think.
Oh thanks Mags! I'll check it out. I was on a Meetup Group that was for Southern CT but I didn't care for most of those people. The woman that ran it was a bit too bossy for me and they weren't anywhere near as much fun as everyone here.

Can I just say how nice it is to have a medical professional on this board?! Good looking out Christine!

Please get to a Dr and let us know how it goes -

She's SO CUTE!!! Nutmeg is a perfect name! Isn't it funny how the girls form such attachments? I've been watching my herd, I got my EE's at 2 weeks old, from a group of probably 100. They stick together like velcro. My BO, Lovey and my Whoknowswhatzit girl, Ducky are always together, and my 2 bantams, Henrietta and Miss Boots, freak out when they're not side by side. On the other side of the coin, May and Flower the BR's are not attached to each other, but both are glued to ME! I'm sure Tiana will form another attachment out of necessity. I believe all of them need a partner.

I'm beat. I got up early and cleaned out the coop completely because we're gonna be away. Then I worked 10:30 to 1 and went to the stupidmarket. I thought we were going to my mom's for a bbq coz my big sister is up from NC, but SURPRISE!!

My mom thought they were coming here. So I cleaned, cooked, installed the new a/c and sweated. Thank God they were late!

We had a really nice time, but then it was clean up, laundry and packing for our trip. Still have 2 loads of wash to do. And so far the packing consists of bringing the suitcases upstairs.

And we decided to go to Lake George to visit with my sister and brother in law coz his band is playing on a boat for the 4th. So we're staying over the 4th in Albany, then home on the 5th. My cousin's wedding is on the 6th and since I'm performing the ceremony, I better get my youknowhat in gear by then.

But Bobby's been great. Worth well more than $9.99...

Looking forward to our alone time.

Hello, I'm in flushing queens and just started raising backyard chickens. We have 4 chickens - a buff Orpington, barred Plymouth rock, a white rock and a partridge. They are 10 weeks old and we just love them. My husband built a beautiful coop. I've been trying to pose pix but I still can't figure how to post them on the site. I'm so glad we took the chicken plunge. They are so much fun. They have a nice size run 5' x 11' and I let them free range for about 1-1/4 hours which is usually when they go back to the run for food or water. They have a 5' x 4' elevated coop. My husband made the run 6' high so it is so easy to clean. My neighbors have been great and I can't wait to get my first egg. Love to hear more about your chicken.
