I have a local friend who boards her horse in NJ. She attends farm animal auctions occasionally there and buys only rhode island red battery hens. As they grow old and pass on..... she then goes and back and gets more to fill the empty spots in her coop. They lay so well for her and are great byc. They are so beat up when she gets them and turn into such thankfull little beauties after months of her care.

Thanks for rescuing that hen Maggie, take lots of pics!

I designed and added some new silkie tees, let me know what you all think. Not trying to get anybody to buy just for feedback!

Wow it's so cold. Hope everyone's girls are ok. I've been defrosting the water a few times a day and have a foot of shavings in the coop. I feel so bad for them but they seem fine.

Hi Carolyn, that electric water bowl is a great idea. I have a double wall waterer on a heater which also rests on patio blocks. The girls always seem to manage to get shavings in the water. It is really bad if I throw a little scratch in the shavings to get them to stirring it around. The deep litter method has its drawbacks.

AOL has been running horribly for quite a while for me. And yes, the other day was the worst. I have switched a lot of my emails over to a Gmail account and have a much better experience with that. I've had my AOL account so long I just can't seem to give it up. It does test my patience, though.

Hi, Al ! I used to use a cookie tin heater for the water bowl. Works great; still have it, but I bought the blue dog bowl on impulse when I was in the pet store a few months ago. The blue was so pretty, I couldn't resist. As for the AOL, it seems to be working just fine today, so apparently, they fixed the glitch.

Stay warm.

Bobby built a heater out of a paint can (not a used one, a new empty one from HD). We put a light bulb in and it works great. And it sits up so high, no shavings. We have to up the watts on the bulb for this really cold weather, though. It's not quite hot enough.

I read an article (in Grit, I think) that putting vaseline on the girls' combs helps to prevent frostbite. I put some on the girls yesterday and it seems to work out fine. The combs look nice and healthy, although they do get a little dirty when the dust sticks to the vaseline.

The waterers outside the coop freeze every couple of hours. I keep boiling water and pouring it over the waterers just to defrost them. I'm gonna do some laundry so they get some warm air from the dryer vent...
