I still have loads of chicken shirts to sell but we've been so busy every weekend with one thing or another. I felt it was time to stay home and relax.

It's ok Donna, I know you just don't love me enough, rest easy. JK! You know I'll be putting up instagram pics like crazy. I did get a blog URL reserved but honestly I'm not sure I'll have time to write as I'm actually driving. I might just write notes in a journal and put it together after the fact. It's going to take all my energy just to get through the driving and the kiddie wrangling.

I am busy as ever throwing stuff out, organizing, etc etc but honestly it kills me every time I look out the back window and see a bare patch where my coop was. I had to buy eggs at the grocery store for the first time in forever and I couldn't stand the idea of not knowing the names of the ladies that laid them. I see beauty in all birds, and always have, but my time with my flock has taught me how smart, funny and clever they are as well. I know I could never adopt a parrot or an emu considering their lifespans but I keep hoping that fate will bring me a crow to raise. I know! It's bad, I shouldn't ever consider keeping wildlife as a pet but who knows, maybe the universe will intervene. I also know that the next time I have chickens I will bring so much more knowledge to it, and the coop I build will be better right from the start. There will be a hospital wing, a brooder box, a quarantine shed, storage for feed oh you name it. I'm going to out-engineer NASA in designing it. Thank you all for the knowledge and good company!

I am new here and do not yet have any chickens, but and working towards that. I am looking for 3-4 chickens. Does anyone know of a farm in the hudson valley area ( I am in southern westchester)that sells them? I am hoping to get them old enough to be out in the coop, or atleast close to it.

You should have come to the show with us all! Next time.... There is a farm in CT called Clark Farm - http://www.clarkfarmbusiness.com/index.html - a few of us have gotten hens from Melissa and been happy with them. It's not that far away and it's a pretty drive. You could also try asking some of the "hobby" farms in northern westchester, like Muscoot and Hilltop Hanover if they have any extras, but they don't usually do stuff like that. I'm in Harrison until June-ish, if you need some advice feel free to PM me and we can hook up in person. I think there are a few people in Stamford, CT area too actually. You could also always try Bennie's Feed Barn in Bedford, they sell feed and sometimes have notices there from people that breed and sell birds. Their prices on wood shavings are much better than the pet stores too. The Pet Pantry in Greenwich also sells chicken feed but they're pricier as you might expect. The guys there told me that sometimes rich people dump their chickens with them when they discover how much poop is involved, you could always give them a ring and see if there are any donations. Of course there's also always Craig's List but I avoid CL since it seems to be full of loonies in general. My experience anyway.

 I am new here.  I live in Mt Vernon, about as far south as you can get in Westchester before you hit the city!  I am on an obsessive fact finding mission, gathering and gathering in anticipation of getting my first chickens!  i have so many questions!  But I have to start somewhere, so , is anyone else this far south?  where does everyone get their feed/supplies from around here?

Welcome BQ! We have lots of good advice here and a good dgroup of friendly folks.

I don't live in NY but I visit Pleasant Valley (near Poughkeepsie) at least once a month. There's a poultry farm there that I want to check out one of these days when I'm there. They have ducks, geese, chickens and pheasants.

Welcome to you too! I live close to Pleasant Valley and think the farm you mention may be Quattros. They have been in business for over 50 years, raise poultry naturally, and their daughter is now a vet. Check out their website...pretty neat.

We had a nice time at the Sussex show and it was great to meet so many of you in person. There was lots of hugging going on yesterday!

I have really nice news to share...Lindsey participated in the show and was surprised with several big wins. She is one happy gal! All the trials and tribulations that I have gone through this past year trying to get her started with silkies, was worth all the effort. I am totally exhausted... but am already planning to bring Lindz back for the fall show.

Sorry I missed everyone at the show.
My sons girlfriends med school graduation was very nice.she was the tiniest of 200 graduates, not reaching 5 foot. It was very special in that her mom hooded her. She is also a pediatrician. It was very long, almost 3 hours sitting in seats in the BU hockey arena.

Had a great time in brimfield also. Bought a number of nice things. I was very proud of myself in that I didn't bring any chicks home with me. Did bring home some very neat chicken related antiques.

Stopped and picked up some tomato and pepper plants.

Good morning all,
Well, I woke up Saturday morning to feed my chicks and as I turned away to get their food, I heard one of them trying to cackle like a rooster. My girlfriend was very upset when I told her it turned out to be one of our 2 black silkie bantams. I thought I had heard that there is a farm on Long Island that I can give him to and that I can go and visit. Any of you from Long Island know where this is or would be able to and willing take him? It's unfortunate that I can't keep him my area but I'd like to give him a good home. Thanks

I picked up a Partridge Silkie from Vera at the show in Sussex. I'm happy to report the chick is doing fine. Now. I set her up in the brooding pen in the coop with food, water and a heater and everything was going along fine. She was eating, drinking and pooping.

Well, apparently last evening between my check-ins, she squeezed herself out of the pen. I went out to check on everyone and lock up the coop and she wasn't in there. I freaked out - it was dark and raining and cold. Fortunately, my dog (who is used to the chickens and thinks she's one of the flock) found her curled up in a ball, wet and cold on the patio.

I rushed her inside and wrapped her in a dry washcloth and my heating pad and after a very scary 10 minutes or so she started peeping a little. I mixed up some SavAChick and was able to get a little into her with an oral syringe. She perked up immediately. I kept her in the heating pad and kept giving her the electrolyte solution. She was finally able to hold her head up and was cheeping for real. I fixed up a small box with a heat lamp, food and the electrolyte solution.

Today she's fine. Eating like crazy again. She'll stay inside with me until the weather is a little nicer and she get's a little bigger. Then we'll try the brooding pen again.

I haven't named her yet. I was thinking of Doris or Penelope, but I think I may go with Gloria, after Gloria Gaynor. ("I Will Survive").

Whew.

On top of all that, my back has started to spasm. I never experienced anything like this before. It's like being stuck randomly with an electric cattle prod. Last night was a misery. I took some ibuprofen despite the havoc it wreaks on my stomach and that has helped a little. Very little. This is going to be a fun day....not.

(PS It was very hard for me to share the chick story. I feel incredibly guilty about the whole thing. I have no idea how she got out of the pen.)

Feeling about the same, but like i recovered the 18 vials of blood. That is one of the nn from our bunch. I brought him to get rid of, but now he is part of the household. Looks like we will have another roo. If i ever get better and can get these breeding pens done, i will have quite an operation going.

Thank you so much for this info. I actually joined BYC the day of or before the "show" and spent the day figuring out where everyone was going! ha ha! I was tempted to get to the show, but couldn't make it in time.
I was just at Bennies for hay for guiniea pigs, and also gathering info on feed etc. Seems like a good place. I will look into the places you mentioned for hens. I really appreciate you offering me advice and to meetup.
