Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

You guys are right, the rope is for opening and closing the ramp.

I'm sure the film thing will go okay, Roberta, but I understand your concern! Good luck making your birds into stars!

Newchick, I was using a feed store in Bedford called Bennies. Now I buy online from Countryside Organics. I wanted a soy free feed and it is impossible to get here so I order online. It comes to about $40 for a 50lb bag with shipping.

Check them on the roost at night. Shine a light on the underneath side of the roost bar and you will see the little buggers if they are there. Check the chickens vent area also with the flashlight.

They sell a natural enzyme product called Poultry Protector and you can spray the chickens with that if it is mites. It is nontoxic and you can spray the coop down with it as well.

The DE is good to keep the number of bugs down but it will not do much for an infestation. I do use DE in the coop and run and like it.

Good luck.

Cool!! I brought a bunch of my birds, was there yesterday to set up, will be there tomorrow afternoon. Too far of a drive to go all three days....
Can't wait for funnelcake!!!!
Also picking up another rescue. Someone found a chicken running down the road in Brooklyn (I think, past Nassau it's all the same to us country folk!) I hope it's not another rooster. For whoever is dropping it off tomorrow, I have a pass for you to get in. You have my phone #, call and give me enough time to meet you at the gate.
Have fun, everyone! Roberta

Kathy, I see you have a caique as your avatar. Does LIPS have a booth at the fair? I am a member, and had NO IDEA they were supposed to be there. When I talked to the fair director about bringing chickens, he sent out a brochure, and in it there was a section for parrots. I asked if he needed more entries, he said it was covered, that L I Parrot Society will be there. Meetings are kind of a trip, but I didn't see anything in the newsletters. Am I that blind?
OK, joke...Why do pirates always wear an eyepatch? Well, they have a parrot on their shoulder, Don't they???
I breed Eclectus, and have a few more breeds as well.
From the crazy bird lady!

I used to be a member of LIPS years ago, but not any longer. They meet too far from me. A dear friend of mine was an active member and moved to Florida a few years ago, Gloria Z. Do you know her? There were Hyacinth Macaws at the show and some budgies, canaries, Bourkes keets, finches I think. My first instinct was that I could have brought Elwood. Then again, all of the birds were in the same unheated tent, the Bourkes weren't looking happy, and I would have been worried about Elwood catching something.

I saw the post about the rescue chicken in Brooklyn. There's another person in Bay Ridge who needs to rehome his chickens. They are annoying the neighbors and his wife said they have to go. They are 4 Black Star hens. I'm tempted, but I'm not set up for them.

I was just loving the chickens. There was a blue self english roo that was gorgeous, and I just wanted to pick up the silkies and hug them. There were 2 EE's that I wished were mine. And this giant beautiful buff orpington. I've decided: I love roosters. I have to get some pics from my nieces camera.

That blue oe roo is mine, his name is Bigfoot. And I have an EE mix, next to his mother, his name is Brutus, and he needs a home (Hint, hint) I hope they all behaved themselves. I know Elise, she had a parrot food biz, she moved down there a few months back. Oh, how many silkies were there? I have 3, a black, blue, and splash there.
And yes. I am scared to death about bringing some disease thing home. I am looking to borrow a few spoonfuls of oxine til I can get some ordered. That tent was pretty warm when we set up on Friday. Crap.
Yeah, meetings are out of the way for me, too.
So what's a few more hens??? It's only 4. Haven't you done the chicken math?

Here's Bigfoot.

Oh he is gorgeous. I wish I could have a roo in the city. Were those silkies yours? The blue and splash were gorgeous. I'll probably end up posting pictures of your birds!!

I don't have any chickens now. I found one at the beginning of the summer and she started me off. I was keeping her temporarily in a large rabbit run until I could get her a proper coop. Then she got sick and it looked like Mareks. I ended up putting her to sleep. It was a very sad time. So I have no chicken now and any bird I brought home wouldn't have a real coop initially. Also, I'm afraid that the virus is still present in the yard. It would be like a death sentence.
