Stella's Social Club

I moved 8 times in 13 years, not counting the twice yearly moves in college. Each move involved purging a lot of stuff - sometimes I would move things that had not even been unpacked. Apart from family heirlooms I learned to give up a lot of that stuff. I have found that the longer you stay in one spot, the more stuff you have to sort through, so 36 years is probably going to be a big job. And having a big garage (or other storage space) definitely contributes to the sheer volume of stuff! If we do eventually move to Florida I am honestly not sure if the chickens will go too, that is a looong road trip. The bees and horses definitely not. The dogs and cats definitely go.

36 years with a borderline hoarder husband - I'm doomed!

I agree 1muttsfan, moving often really helps purge the unnecessary stuff!

You should ask Cetawin. She moved from Oregon to Kentucky five years ago with all her chickens and ducks in the back of a moving truck, in winter, no less. I know she has a thread on here talking about it, with photos.
I found and read Cetawin's story - she should write a book! Would love to know how she did transforming that lovely old house with all the awful paint inside!

Ha I am still transforming...some of the gosh awful paint is still there. But we've been doing so much here the inside of the house has been slow.

Mary has had 4 houses (going on 5) since I've known her. Moving chickens I'm sure is simple compared to moving emus and a donkey that is afraid of the trailer.

This move is certainly the right thing for them to do. It's time for them to enjoy themselves and not be tied down to animals that will need high dollar care.

I hate moving just because of the volume of stuff you accumulate over the years. So I've been in the same house for 15 years. If I ever did move, it would be out of this state.

Uh, that is three going on four missy!

Moving is hard work. We've sold 2 houses in the past 6 months, one was used as a guest house, plus storage, for the last 7 years and the other was my 96 yr old Dads who decided it was time to go into assisted living. We had to clean out 2 houses, 2 barns and 2 sheds with 30 yrs of stuff in them!!! Had all the fun of inspections and the like. Now it's our time to decide if we want to move, but here again it's the animals holding us back. I got a lot of inspiration from Mary taking the big step tho. Hobby farming is a lot of work and very restricting .

Move to a smaller place where you can keep 6 hens. Woodland and Davis are Cities in California that allow this. It is not too much work and there are chicken sitters around here.

Quote: Boy, I know what you mean! It was the land i loved about this property. The house hadn't been lived in for 2 years and leaves were piled up in the corners of the dining room! I thought I couldn't live here until we did major work but when you're a farmer at heart, you overlook these things!

I wish I had decorating abilities, but I'd rather be in the garden or barn than in the house anyway.

It is nice to know I am not the only gypsy hoarder in the bunch! :D

I am sitting here with five chicken coops and a brooder house and tomorrow I am going to meet with a guy to talk about hiring him to buil me a coop! How ridiculous is that? I wish there was already a coop on this property but there isn't. I've looked on Craigslist for something but they are all crap or one I have already had and don't want again. So I am going to see what a shed builder can do for me. Doesn't have to be fancy or big, just sturdy and watertight. I hate leaky coops! Oh, and I want a crapload of ventilation!

Don't forget to take into account the lay of the land- don't want crows echoing and booming around in the mornings like the last set!!

Oh wait... you're just doing hens this time... right?! You KNOW you're going to want one rooster in there! :D
