Haha, that's funny because I've found the same. My Dad gets a bit freaked out by them, as does my male neighbor, but I've had female friends and relatives come over and they're happy to get right in there with them and pet them, etc.

Beautiful white emu you have, too. I'm hoping to hatch some whites from my blonde pair next year. Or track down some eggs from whites/blondes this year (I only add birds I've hatched myself to my farm, for the most part, biosecurity reasons) but I really doubt that'll happen, haha.

Your blondes are adorable as well. I’m sure they’ve grown since your avatar pic!

I prefer to hatch my own and had originally planned to only keep and raise my own. I learned over the last few years though that you usually can not choose an emu’s mate. Once you have more than one adult couple THEY take charge of mate selection and I had related ones wanting to hook up. My attempt to separate them into individual paddocks resulted in no eggs at all one year! We even built a paddock clear across the property but they knew each other was there and they all refused to breed. :hmm It was a learning experience for sure.
Since then I’ve rehomed any that were related and brought in white and blondes from 4 different farms that have no related stock.
It’s been a real learning experience with emus. They are so unlike any other animal I’ve raised.

They definitely have gotten bigger :) They're almost nine months old now. I also have an older 18 month old standard brown female. The blondes might be related, but also might not. I'm hoping they will all get along as a trio, but we'll see how that goes.

Ciara, the older girl, should be laying next year and technically the blonde male should also be old enough to mate, so we'll see what happens. I'm expecting about 50/50 blondes and standards from them.

If the blondes hatched in March they should both be old enough to breed the 2020 season. Just keep an eye around June when mate selection begins that the dominate female doesn’t start chasing away the non dominate girl. Sometimes it’s the male that will chase the non dominate female. It doesn’t always happen, but it’s common. If you see this it’s best to put the female being chased by herself until they calm down.
