Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Yes, the unseasonably warm temps are really strange for us. It was in the 30's last week and now 65 or so. I'll keep your family in NY on my prayer list. Its going to be nasty, hoping for the best for all concerned!
I haven't heard from most of them but the power failures are probably to blame for that. Commuting is going to be a nightmare in NY for a while.
I love the snowflake. They look so pretty crocheted. I have some in my Christmas decorations that must be thirty or forty years old. I havent hung them in years. Maybe I'll get them out when I do the tree and wash them and restiffen them and then add some glitter. I think I made about a dozen of them. I have quite a few patterns of snowflakes also. I could add one on each of my packages to my family this year for them to remember me by.

I just got word from my daughter in NC that they came through the storm all right even though they're along the coast. She spent the storm at the Camp Lejune labor and delivery with a friend from college who gave birth during the storm. Mom and baby fine but my daughter didn't say whether it was a boy or girl.

I am saying prayers for all who are yet to get the full storm.
Oh, if you do I'd love to see pics of your's! This is my newest addiction and my family may be sick to death of them by the time I move onto something else but for now they think they are super cool.

My cool little snow flake

Thanks for posting a pic! I didn't take any pics before I sent them.

I got all my smaller squares joined into 12x12 squares, I ended up w/ 19 including the ones that were already 12 inches and the ugly ones I had crocheted and didn't send, so I need to crochet one more 12 incher, then I will have enough for a 4 x 5 afghan. With borders on each square that should make a big enough blanket for just the bed top, if not definately a lap blanket.
Wow you are on top of things!

Here is a pic of the squares assembled. I still need to crochet one more square, and this isn't the real layout, still have a long way before I nail the real layout.

They look so cool all laid out together!

I came across something purely by accident today that has me floored!!!!! I know this isn't a quilting thread but I came across this while working on my crocheted blanket (I plan to line the back w/ fabric) Anyway at first I was going to do solid blocks of one solid fabric and applique a shape in felt or fleece onto it, but I have been on a decluttering kick lately before I end up on hoarders. So I decided to use what I had, so when I was going to use scraps of fabric in one large block I thought I wouldn't like the look, so I over cut the squares and made various sewing and cutting and discovered I could start w/ two squares of solid fabric, make 3 seams (really 6 one on each side of the line) and 3 cuts and end up w/ this

You end up w/ 2 blocks this one and one exactly opposite of this! I think I have a new easy peasy go to block for quilting!!!!!

Oooooh! I like that block. What a great way to use up scraps. Also, if you look at it closely, you could make a crocheted block out of it also.

It would be a very easy crochet block.

My points aren't great on this set of blocks, but I was just kicking around didn't even think I was going to piece when I started and I used a chalk line as my guide, when I do this again (and I will do it again it was to easy not to do again) I will use a more precise mark and my points should be better.

Okay this is dangerous easy. Here are the blocks that will be the back side of my crocheted blanket from this swap.

Do you guys love the detail in my cat blocks? lol lol lol
There are two squares from printed blocks (remember I did scraps) and two blocks I messed up on the placement but had already cut the block apart before I noticed

Okay I know you guys are getting tired of these posts today, but I am so excited it is working sooooo much better then I even thought it would.

Oh my gosh this just brought back memories! When I was in my late 20s I made a quilt with blocks like these, but laid out differently, and in shades of blue. Anyway I appliqued a large, padded (with batting) dove to the middle of the quilt on top of a square of solid dark blue rimmed with a lighter blue solid. I hadn't thought about that blanket in decades (the ex got it in the divorce lol).

In all these years of quilting I never thought to combine it with crochet (course I am a lot newer to crochet). Well that's not entirely true but I added crochet in very small ways. So the squares are just tacked to the blocks then joined? No layers of fabric with batting between them? Cause that would be a little too warm for our climate except maybe 4 weeks out of the year. Well that just sets my creative mind to churning with all the possibilities. I just don't see how this helps me use up old fabric though! The designs I'm seeing in my head all require more fabric! LOL!

My Dad doesn't like getting his toes stuck in the yarn of crocheted blankets so I crocheted his one blanket with very small tight stitches. It was a ton of work. I like this idea better. I just need to get over this flu bug so I can finish my other projects so I can start on more quilts.

Now see this is how the problem keeps perpetuating itself! hahaha

Cathy I didn't make it to the PO cause I came down with the flu Monday and I didn't want to touch anything, that was going to the baby, while I was sick. I'm doing better today but I may stay down one more day to get my strength back (DH's idea not mine, once I feel better I tend to be off and running again but I don't seem to bounce back as well as I used to these days... getting older I guess) then I'll wash the cuddle sack and mail it with the extra squares. Oh I need to try to get a pic of it first. I always forget that part. I hope your DD loves it! It's very long because I hate it when these things don't give a baby plenty of leg room to kick their toes around. My babies also were very long and skinny so that's always what I'm thinking when I make baby items. lol If it doesn't work on your new Grandbaby then you can just donate it to someone that can use it. But of course I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works for her.

Yes no batting or anything between, but I did sew a tiny bit extra wide seam (bigger then 1/4 inch quilting seam) and folded it over to the dark side and zig zagged over it like a false french seam only w/ zig zag instead of straight. That way there wouldn't be any or much fraying, since the crochet has holes.

Sunny- Don't worry about the blocks, no biggie. I have been so busy with everything here that I don't have time to assemble it right now anyway! Please do get to feeling better though. Don't worry about the "cuddle sack" not working....she will definately LOVE it and will use it as long as possible. She is so excited and thankful to you....she's like "Mom, you get to know such sweet ppl!" Of course I agree! Anyway, feel better and get plenty of rest!!
