Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Hi everyone. We had to go to Lancaster today to get DH's hearing aid fixed at Costco and do some shopping there also. I made it to Michaels and Joanne's and found the rest of the yarn I couldn't even get on line. I got the plum, cranberry and lavendar blue. Now I have a variety. I have about six or seven squares done already and each one is different. I've been trying out different patterns. Will try to take a picture of them but am in the middle of getting ready for DD and DGD's visit on Monday.

My faithful shepherd is getting worse. She's been doing pretty well since we put the wheelchair ramp in place for her to come up when she couldn't get up the steps but tonight it was more noticable that she is having a harder time getting up from a laying position. It won't be long now before I have to put her down but hope and pray she'll go in her sleep instead. She'll be 16 in Nov. She was born the same day as one of my grandsons. I think I told you before that she belonged to my second son who has passed away. He gave her to me about 10 years ago when he couldn't keep her when he had to move. She hasn't seen DDor DGD in several years. She may not recognize them since she can't see very well but she may remember them.

Still hot here and now it will stay this way until the end of summer. Thankfully not much wind.
Betty I so hope you get your wish and she passes peacefully in her sleep. We will keep you in our thoughts. I know how much she means to you!!!

Good Morning~

Sunny~ I totally forgot you didn't have internet hooked up yet. Bless your heart for having to drive into town to check in with us.

I've missed you!!! So glad your flock facilities are coming together nicely. That's a huge job!!! Sounds like you gotten tons accomplished in the last 2 weeks. YAY!!! All the inside stuff can wait until you have your feathered babies situated.

I hope everyone has a great day~

Thanks Kim! That was our thinking too. Get the flock and the dogs settled first, then we can unpack.

Hope today finds everyone well! Temps are supposed to hit triple digits over the next few days so getting the animals taken care of is definitely the priority. The dogs have been set up with their own pool so they are very happy right now. Getting the birds to cool down is a little tougher. I put freeze packs out but I don't see them using them. I guess I will just keep giving them frozen water melon and wetting the ground in the run area. Hope they stay cool enough that way.

Have a great weekend everybody!!!

Good morning everyone. It's 97 so far and not quite 2pm. I've been out and watered my flock and my friend Mary's. The shade cloth I have over my chicken pens and aviary pens seems to work with my flock. I have some on the side of the pen that faces east and west also. They like it when I sprinkle down the ground so they can lay in it. I guess it's cooler that way. I haven't lost a chicken yet from the heat so it must help.

I couldn't find the royal sparkle on the Internet when I ordered the other from JoAnn's but they had it in Lancaster. They didn't have it in Bakersfield when I went looking for the other colors that I couldn't get off the Internet yet I found it in Lancaster. I didn't get it because I found the equivelent in another brand another time.

I'm stuck in the office as I shampooed the living room carpet and shampooed myself right into here. Jada Blue is with me and she isn't pleased about it as she wants in the living room close to the cooler. She'll have to lay in here near me for a while until the rug dries. I have a bunch of computer work to do so now is a good time to do it. I installed a window shade this morning that I bought at Lowe's. It's supposed to cut the sun and not heat up the room but you can still see out. The mini blind just wasn't doing it. The sun will be hitting that window soon and I can see if this one will help.

Well, everyone keep hooking. I brought my crocheting in here also so maybe I can do some. I started a new 12" that says I love you on it. Actually it has an I and two hearts and a U on it. I'm thinking of trying it out in a rectangle. It wouldn't be hard to draw the blocks to follow. Have a good day.

How is everyone's weekend going? Its hot as heck in Maine! Have checked on my girls several times today, refilling water and feeding frozen melon. Think I'm going to grill steak for supper as its too dang hot to cook inside and heat up my kitchen. Hoping it cools down a bit so I can crochet, I just can't when its humid! Anyway, was just checking in......have a great evening!

We had another 2 days of crazy extreme heat (105-106), but FINALLY some relief today.

YAY!!! Last night it was thundering & lightening, but we didn't get much of a rainfall at my house at all. Calling for more showers today, but it's sunny and dry, but at least it's cooler.

My flock has been miserable!!! Extra miserable since they've had their free range freedom taken away. Hawks are so bad right now. The past 2 days I thought it was clear to release them to freedom to only have a hawk dive bomb after them after I released them. One day it was the ducks at the edge of the woods and yesterday they swooped down on the backside of the coop, but I don't even think a chicken was over there at the time. I have to laugh about them swooping down after my 3 fat pekin ducks, b/c I guess they decided they were too fat to pick up. No one was hurt or even touched, but very dramatic to witness. I just hate I can't let them out to free range. I think it must be fledglings learning to hunt. We've always had hawks raising their babies in the surrounding woods, but noticed more families this year and I've never had this much of a problem.

Sure enough as soon as I opened the pop door to let them out in the run I heard the shrill of a hawk and could see it in the front yard checking things out to see if I was going to let them out some breakfast. Arrrggggg!!!!!!

Sunny~ Glad you are getting things settled. Sorry you are experiencing the heat as well. How does the freezer packs work? I need to get some. I didn't have any watermelon to offer my flock yesterday. I felt so bad for them. I went into the coop after dark and put some water under their wings. They really hate it when I get them wet. I really need to amend my whole flock set up esp if I'm going to have them in locked in the run more often. I want to move my whole coop, but no time to do it right now.

Betty~ Enjoy your company. I know you are busy preparing for their arrival. I can't wait to see a pic of your heart square. I've never tried filet crocheting.

Cathy~ I hope you get some relief from the heat as well. It's 92 degrees right now, but I'll take that over the triple digits.

Kate~ Oh geocaching sounds like so much fun. I've never done it.

I hope everyone has a great day~

All my cleaning is done, a turkey in the oven for tomorrow night and green beans with bacon, onions and new potatoes are ready to go with steak for dinner. It's 105 but cool in the house even with the oven on. Since I'll be gone most of tomorrow driving to pick up my company I thought it easier to cook the turkey and such today. I'll do the stuffing after we have dinner and make gravy so all I'll have to do when I get back home tomorrow is heat everything up. I will have to cook the potatoes though but they won't take long. I might make some choc. chip cookies, my granddaughters favorite even if she is grown up, and have them for tomorrow also.

I did a couple of 6" squares this afternoon when I finally got to sit down and rest. Will take new pix after my company leaves. We'll be gone all day Tuesday and won't be home until sometime Wednesday, in time for DH to go to his meeting at the Masonic Lodge

We cleaned out the coops this morning and I sprayed 3 of my hens that either Henry is too exuberant when mating or they're being picked on by other hens. I bought some spray called "hot pick" to see if it works. I've started saddles with wings to go over the wings but I'm afraid they might be too hot for my girls in all this heat.

I hope everyone is staying cool and drinking lots of water.

My DD is finally home from working at camp. I'm soooooooo excited!!!!!!
love.gif
Oh it's so good to have her home!!! I've missed her so much!!!! Well everyone has missed her. Our cat, Winky is following her all around the house rubbing all over her, the dogs attacked her and Norman the Silkie fell asleep in her lap. She basically got home in time for us to swoosh her away for a family get together at one of my sister in-law's house.

On our way home we found out that some friends of ours from Fla that have been vacationing in Utah area will be driving through our way on their way home, so they are going to stop and stay the night with us. I'll be up early tomorrow cleaning.

Betty~ You've been busy as a bee. Oh a turkey in the oven sounds so yummy, as does the rest of the dinner you will be serving. I'm sure your granddaughter will LOVE the choc chip cookies.

Alethea~ I guess the best way to describe geocashing is that it's like a big huge scavenger hunt, but you use a GPS device and the treasures are placed in a water proof type container called cashes or geocashes. I guess the closest thing I've done to it is letter boxing or orienteering w/ the Girl Scouts. I'm not completely sure how they work. We'll have to get Kate to explain it to us.

Here's a wikipdia description

Kate~ Can't wait to hear about your geocashing experience. Did you find some good treasures?
