I'd bet good chocolate that the fellow is also the cause of your bare-backed girls. The boys' back always look fine, because they're breaking the girls' feathers! There's a BYC gal named luvmychicks or something close that sells darling hen aprons that work wonders, and she also sells the removable matching shoulder protectors. She's really affordable, and it makes all the difference in the world. I often see auctions for her stuff here, and I've bought at least 20 aprons from her to protect my girls and when there is a bad molt, they come in handy...one of my fellas had a bright, flowery apron on for a while

I don't think peepers will help at all. Picking usually happens around the face and vents.

Good luck of re-homing the little guy.

Katy, I can't believe you had hail damage to the poor crop after it struggled to grow for you! What sad news. Will crop insurance help out, at least?

No problem at all... Just keep them

I should be getting my pink one's the weekend after next too!

Thank you I only want a couple, I lost my blue Ameraucana and would love another blue, and maybe a splash I am keeping my fingers crossed that you have a great hatch. I think my DH is going to shoot me, I am getting a few wheaten marans and then a few Ameraucana's from you and DD is getting silkies. I am so dead.

I do have 2 SLW I think are roosters so they will become supper if no one wants them. I got them out of the pullet bin.

Hope everyone is staying cool in this hot weather. I am hoping to have pen done this weekend. I have to make a trip to Bellville to pick up some clothes for the grand daughters.

Sounds like me, my pair of blue silkies are looking like roo's now!

So looks like back to the drawIng board for me! Definitely buying whites this time around... Probably atleast four just to be safe! Darn you chicken odds

, mentioned to your DD that she may want to do the same... I'd rather rehome a rooster or two than start over the search for silkies beings as nobody out that way has them! The roosters are fun anyways, my neighbor calls mine my "gay rooster" because he's so soft spoken... But it's just too darn cute I think!

Bynaturefarms is correct:
Black x Splash- 100% Blue
Black x Blue- 50% Black 50% Blue

A splash would be a miracle with the black roo! But, ya just never know what split may be under them!

The way crop insurance works is you buy a policy for a certain percentage of loss that you want to be covered for. If your crop production is less than that percentage of what your yearly annual production is then it will pay you. There are also seperate hail insurance policies that a person can buy if you can afford to spend the extra bucks (we can't). I'd love to be able to afford the 100% coverage but that is cost prohibitive. Normally we buy the 65% policy so if between the drought, hail and wind damage we harvest less than 65% of our yearly average then we'll get a small payment.

It would stink if you qualified for a payment, then...so I hope everything is much better than it looks! Please, Lord, let them have a good harvest despite appearances!? Let the harvest be like the bread and fish!

Question: what was it that chooks said you could sprinkle on the feed to help get rid of pasty butt even in adult chickens? My ladies are leaving me some really dirty eggs and I'm too tired to search for it. Thanks all.

Actually, the roo has been about half striped of feathers himself. Started with his feathered feet right after I brought him home last summer and he's been missing feathering on his legs, chest, back, neck and head. Talking to the skin here. Really looking pathetic. First thing I'd like to be rid of him. I'd be willing to wait on the peepers to see if anything improves, but he has to go.

In this case, I'm going to ask what you feed, and what you use for treats, because generally this is the hallmark of some form of deficiency, although I have heard of cases where mice or rats are to blame for similar damage. Do a search on mice and rats eating feathers right out of sleeping birds, and let us know what you're feeding. You poor thing! The poor chickens! I hate unexplained issues like this.
