Sunflower Chickens

I've never had a broody either and always wanted one. My first group consisted of two BO's which I just knew would go broody, since everyone talks about their broody tendencies (they weren't from a hatchery either, but were locally produced). They're going on two years old now and nada, so the chances get slighter and slighter. I then got a Speckled Sussex which I'd heard go broody often. She got to about 9 months old and had started laying but never did well and at that point slowly declined until she died so never had a chance to go broody either. I built an incubator, thinking that Murphy's Law would mean as soon as I set eggs, one of the hens would decide to sit but even that didn't work! I always swore I would never get a "froo-froo" chicken but lately have started thinking "well, just one silkie wouldn't hurt" :)

And the irony? My sister has an Isa Brown that regularly goes broody....

All of my white rocks from Ideal went broody last year. After having a mama hatch and raise chicks I wont do the box again if I dont have to. Yup famous last words! But still rather have mama hatch them and raise.

We've only had one broody - a blue orpington who hatched 5 chicks the first of March. She has been a fabulous mother with the chicks and is still tending to them. Not as much as before, but especially when free ranging, she is pretty adamant that the chicks stay with her. The splash orpington roo in the coop has adopted them as well and is as protective as the mother hen. Very interesting and very easy process. Too bad you can't make a hen go broody!

We are trying another experiment in the coop - privacy "curtains" on the nesting boxes. We have some "teenagers" that like to play in the nesting boxes all day long. Renee recommended hanging curtains, but my male household has been doubtful. So, this weekend, I hung curtains on half of the nesting boxes. First, the teenagers do not go into these nesting boxes. The other interesting part is where the hens are laying - first it was evenly divided between the curtained nesting boxes and bare nesting boxes. By yesterday, all the hens were laying behind the curtains. The boys were amazed.

Our household is easily entertained with chicken behaviour!

"Pay no attention to that hen behind the curtain!!"

...sorry...had to throw in the Wizard of Oz reference...

Curtains are great to keep them from eating eggs, too. Once they are out the eggs aren't very visible. Curtains & golf balls- tools of the trade! Who knew?

I think a curtain is a great idea! I just built this 6 holer that is great but this "want to be" broody white rock is having trouble picking a spot. Partly because I collect eggs daily. But maybe the curtian will make her stay put. Looking for the staple gun!

Hey Tonya I have a silky about to hatch 3 wellies for you and now have a white rock that wants to sit so I am saving her some wellie eggs. When your in the area or know someone comming your way I can send them. Course I am counting before they hatch. But the silky has been true and the white rocks do a great job. I will put nine marked eggs under the white rock.

That is great! I asked my brother on Easter when he was planning a trip up to KC. We will figure something out.

HEHEHE...only you would remember that quote!

Speaking of the hen behind the curtain, there is a downside to this, they now shriek at me when I come into the coop! You would have thought I peeked into their dressing room and caught them all undressed or something!

okay - i have the day off and i really want to go outside and chill w/my girls - but i have to resist that urge long enough to get house clean lol

Maybe we could request some more rain - I'll be a good girl and stay in then
