Sunflower Chickens

I've never had a broody either and always wanted one. My first group consisted of two BO's which I just knew would go broody, since everyone talks about their broody tendencies (they weren't from a hatchery either, but were locally produced). They're going on two years old now and nada, so the chances get slighter and slighter. I then got a Speckled Sussex which I'd heard go broody often. She got to about 9 months old and had started laying but never did well and at that point slowly declined until she died so never had a chance to go broody either. I built an incubator, thinking that Murphy's Law would mean as soon as I set eggs, one of the hens would decide to sit but even that didn't work! I always swore I would never get a "froo-froo" chicken but lately have started thinking "well, just one silkie wouldn't hurt" :)

And the irony? My sister has an Isa Brown that regularly goes broody....

I have 2 unbreakable broodies right now, and 5 more I broke by moving them to a totally different environment. The 2 are hatching eggs for me today, and I'll let them raise those. I have one who's nearly done raising hers, too.

My broodiest birds have been bantam Cochins and Chanteclers, with a Barred Rock close behind.

I hope your necropsy comes back without any pathogens- that's a hard worry to have for too long, but I did send one girl off a couple of years ago and she came back as having had an egg broken internally and it had gone necrotic.

I hope you get good results!

I'm half-dead with bronchitis and no energy to even get out of bed. Hope everyone enjoys the lovely day!

Hey, Renee,
Still waiting; probably will have results at the end of the week. My one hope is that she aspirated some Sevin while I was dusting her recently. I could see that causing enough irritation to make her congested and sick. Rest of the flock is healthy and laying up a storm.
What a relief to have found that out about your hen, as sad as that must have been. Thanks for the well wishes.

Thanks!!

Well I was at a friends house all day so I will get pics tomorrow. The duckling is a Khaki Campbell and the chickens are bantam Orp and bantam Orp/Silkie and some Wyandotte mixes.

Yeah!! What breeds?

SLW, BLRW, Orps. No Wheaten Marans yet, but most of their eggs have pips. Seems like those are always the last to hatch. I had company all day until about 8 so I was nicely surprised when I finally made it down to check the incubator.

I had sourland try and do his broody magic but so far no luck I had one go broody last year a bantam EE hatchery stock so I am hoping she does again my other broody was a blue Ameraucana that I lost due to my son's dog
