Sunflower Chickens

Sweet lookin' chicks you have there Nana! You've done well. If you would indulge me, I would like to show off a couple of my own. They're a little over three weeks old.

Here's my sweet little Brownie. I believe she is a she judging by the penciling on her feathers. She no pushover either. She gets right in there and stands up for herself.

This is Hoppy along with Brownie. Hoppy is my survivor chick. This Golden Lakenvelder is the first at everything and not shy either. The reason we call he/she Hoppy is because it was jumping and hopping up on everything almost as soon as it was hatched.

My wife and I just love our chicks and have loads of fun with them.

Ouch! How exactly did this happen?

i was splitting fire wood with a sledge and a wedge. The sledge head fell off so I used my hand to swing the sledge hammer head into the wedge. smashed my right hand between the sledge and the wedge got really mad then did the very same thing with the left hand but this time my pinky was inside the hole for the stick so it smashed more of my finger.

Oh, that sounds so painful. I hope they start to heal soon!

We're slowly getting wheat harvest done. Between equipment breakdowns and little showers that keep running us out of the field it's been rather slow going. I figured this is how it would be....no rain for months but as soon as the wheat was ripe it would start in. We've just been getting little showers so not enough to do any good, just make us quit cutting, but at least so far the hail and bad weather has went around us. On a brighter note, the wheat is yielding better than any of us thought it would....still not a bin buster by any means but considering the growing conditions we're happy with it. Makes me kind of sad tho when I think how the yield might have been had we had rain when it needed it.

Katy I started driving a combine on a custom harvest crew when I was 13. We would get out of school, go home, eat lunch and within an hour be on our way to Oklahoma. I did that every year until I went to college. We had fun but we worked very hard, long, dirty, dusty hours. Sometimes we would work so many days in a row that my sisters and I would pray for rain so we could get a day off. Then when it rained all the farmers were chomping at the bit wanting to get their wheat cut when it was too wet to cut. My dad always tried to get as much done as we could before any storms.

The worst, however, was one year in Nebraska when it rained off and on for days and days. The farmers were all going nuts and I swear we were all just about to kill each other with boredom waiting to work.

I'm glad your harvest has been a little better than expected. The weather has been crazy this year. We are not too far from some of the flooding on the Missouri river. My sister witnessed the tornado that took out a major part of Joplin, Mo. I guess when I look around I have to remember to count my blessings.

I am sorry it is a stressful time! I am so happy that it is better than you expected, tho. After it is done, I hope you get some wonderful soaking rains to fill those ponds and help with the grass and silage.

Some days we are so rushed and distracted that we forget how good we actually have it. Thanks for the reminder.

Glad that there is a little bright spot in your harvest. I had prayed you would have a really great harvest. Sorry that you did not get the rain you needed this year. Hopefully next year will be better.
