A few times a year my ducks get spoiled with watermelon
I cut it in quarters and let them go to town
They love this and corn on the cob
Mind you the price of watermelon has home through the roof
This one was 8.99 😡
They didn’t waste a bite though

My girls have never tried it, desperate to let them though. Plus I'd really love some myself

I'm tired of cucumber and sugar. I want the real thing!

Gorgeous pictures, but please tell me why the minute I saw the last picture I thought "oh a dragon"😭

I feel like I'm scamming the egg industry :gig
They're just doing their thing trying to sell eggs, meanwhile I'm raising an army of their birds :lau

Now that you mention the duck industry, I've never hear about the living conditions of industry ducks, are they as bad as battery hens?

In terms of factory farming I've seen some horrendous conditions online-
In terms of the specific farm my girls come from, it's free range, and the ducks have swimming water. I only know as much as they show online, which all looks lovely as far as public appearances go. Right now the birds will be indoors, as free ranging is currently illegal.
The birds still live short lives and I can't lie that I feel pretty sad that my girls mums and dad's will have been someone's dinner by now. Perhaps sensitive of me, but I can't shake that feeling.

The interesting thing I'll never know, is if my girls are related. I call them sisters, but they're more likely half siblings or cousins. Possibly unrelated, I'll never know

I want to give you all a heads up on hormone shots for ducks
It may work on some great but on my girl it only gave me more issues
It never stopped her from laying eggs but what it did do directly or indirectly was cause her shells to be so paper thin they broke as she laid them
I touch the shell it crumbled
I was so scared an egg would break inside her
We did this to give this poor girl a break from egg laying as she has gone steady since last April no winter break and has been battling vent issues since December
4 antibiotics for bacterials that were elevated
Gleat forming at the urethra after thousands at the vet and avian vet finally they tested the gleat and found aspergillosis not of the lungs but at the urethra
Fungal meds now on week 5 of 12
But we agreed not having to push an egg through the swollen vent may give her area a break as the fungal meds are given
But now I have a larger issue
So either the shot is causing thin shells or it’s messed with her mind and she thinks she isn’t laying so isn’t eating her oyster shells
Either way it’s put my duck at risk
There will be no more hormone shots given. I started her on durvet calcium 2 times a day
After day 1 the egg wasn’t broken but still not fully hard I was able to hit my fingernail into it a few times and break in
Next day it was solid again and couldn’t break in
If today is solid then I’ll cut back ti 1/4 of the dose .25 ml only once a day for a few more days
Something to keep in mind if you ever think about the hormone shots for your birds. I was not told this could be a possibility

That is kind of sad to think about, at least your girls have an amazing life of abusing you (and Sprightly surfboarding on Dougie)
