it is physically dangerous for the hen. A rooster does not have an external penis, so the chicken does not have a "place" for the penetration. So the penis of the drake can tear the chicken and she can die from it.

Thanks so much for looking it up! It was a neat idea and worked fine for a couple years. I keep meaning to update the article with new pics of the current tub.

But basically, the boat was so old, the floor had some cracks and holes in it, which allowed the water and duck muck to get between the floor and the very bottom of the boat, and I had no way to clean it out. The area would drain, like any normal boat, but the mucky, stinky, gunky stuff couldn’t be sprayed out. It stunk! We considered cutting out the floor to open it up, but eventually decided to just pull it back out.

Oh my gosh the first time I saw it I was freaked out
Then one of my boys didn’t jump out right after he did his thing and one of the other ducks thought it was a worm or fish in the pond and took a bite
So for a week or two I had to put ointment on it and lube to keep it from drying out as it hung out an inch
To this day when he has a poo it falls out slightly and he rocks a few times to get it back in
But this doesn’t slow that boy down at all
He can still use it to mate

I disagree, there is nothing shameful in the anatomy of a duck. All are made as intended. False discretion limits who has information, and that serves no one. Reproduction is the most basic of all nature's processes, bacteria-on-up, everything has at its core the drive to continue life. I have ducks and chickens, I didn't know the danger until someone here warned me. I am very grateful for the knowledge. Without a duck's penis, we don't get ducklings.

The first time I had to put a finger inside a hen to see if she was egg bound was an odd moment. Then applying a cream meant for human-female-yeast-infections (Canesten) to her when I figured out she had a yeast infection. Pocking holes into the wall to drain ascitites.... none are things I dreamt were part of care-taking.

I have a poor girl who has been dealing with vent gleat since December
It’s a daily routine to have a finger in her vent 3 times a day
We are now just past 2 weeks of fungal meds and I’m not seeing any improvements yet
I just hope this gets figured out as I hate doing it to her
