Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

The two muscovy are back to rude health. They are now eating brewer's yeast with their pellets (as is the third muscovy who didn't have symptoms.) I just stopped adding Rooster Booster Poultry Cell to their water.

PingyWingy is clearly not ill but can't walk. He is full of himself, and for the last two days has started eating more, but he struggles to get out of his wading pool . He stands to preen his underneath after his swim but collapses back on the ground afterwards. There is no longer a problem with one knee hotter than the other: both his knees are the same warm temperature. No swelling no redness and no obvious pain. He just seems to like sitting around all day shouting out his orders to the muscovy when they come up to his pen

It's been cold and wet for 3 days and so I have only taken him put to the pen and wading pool for limited periods. He sits in a plastic tote in the rear porch where he can see the muscovy outside and they can see him. I am still giving him Rooster Booster Poultry Cell made up in pedialyte and 1ml High Level Vit B Complex twice a day. I have to drive 850 miles down to Florida tomorrow for a week, and will have to take him with me. I can't leave his care to the roommate here in Northern Virginia, although the roommate will care for the muscovy. The complication in Florida is that my son's laying flock of pekins are currently boarded out in my backyard and sleeping in my coop. PingyWingy's dog crate is in the coop and so he could sleep in there. I will take a dog pen down with me to give him a safe place in the garden, but I know he will be in danger from my son's drake if not safely in the pen. PingyWingy will probably sleep in his tote in the house! We are returning to NoVa for 4th of July, so this little fluffy is going to be well traveled.

There's always one...
The young ones have the routine down. I lock up the older ducks and the young ones get out of the pond and head to their area. Once I'm in their area Moe, Larry and Curly get inside their house. Shemp, on the other hand, can't seem to manage it. She then has the nerve to act like I'm going to eat her when I have to catch her to put her in.
They all still run from me even if I have treats. Ungrateful critters.

On a side note...
I can't tell them apart. Just names I use for them. :lau
#2 They all quack! Yay!

Mine are almost 6 weeks old but no quacks yet so I don't know what to think. I am hoping for at least 2 girls but I know my luck. If the eggs came from my one Mallard duck she usually throws off all boys. I am going to catch them again at 8 weeks old and listen to them. They are skittish of me but come within 6 feet for treats. They do go back in the pen. I spread my arms and make the sound of a Hawk all the while telling them to go in the pen. If it wasn't for the privacy fence between me and the neighbors I am sure I would be committed by now, lol.

Mine are almost 7 weeks. I do use hand waving to get them where I want to go as I tell them to "Go to bed". LOL I also have the dreaded blue net to use if they are too stubborn to get out of the pond.
I ordered females but you never know. Glad that's how it turned out.

Smart move. I just let mine hatch out of 4 eggs that hatched. I knew it was risky but I figured I would advertise the boys and if they don't go as much as I hate it we have a friend that feeds his family with them. My husband has to do it while I am not home as I can't be around when they go. It's hard to have drakes born.

I am hoping in another two weeks I will know one way or the other for sure. The longer I keep them the harder it is.

I found a great all rubber net at our Walmart in the fishing department a couple of years ago. It is a Godsend. My other nets all got tangled in their wings and feet, this one has no tangling to it at all. It's so much easier on the ducks.
