Switching our dog to a homemade diet

Pics
I've been making homemade food for my dogs for the last 5 years or so. It started when my little girl almost died. Long story short, a special low protein diet recipe was created for her by a nutritional specialist. My boy, her brother, also got it because his kidneys were showing damage. Part of the recipe included adding Balance IT K. It's "Vitamin, mineral, and amino acid powder to create homemade dog food. Just mix with fresh foods you like to feed and your dog enjoys." Since their diet was so specialized I don't know anything about what a typical dog would need but here's the website. They also have a recipe tool.

My little girl passed in September and my boy is in end stage kidney failure. He stopped eating his regular food so now he gets whatever he will eat. Not cooking for them anymore has been nice. It's one less thing to stress over so I won't be continuing homemade for any future dogs. I might look into getting prepared raw food delivered.
I'm sorry about your pups. Watching them go is so hard. :hugs
I bet they had an amazing life though! They were so lucky to have you giving them the optimum diet and love! Thank you for your input, I'll look at that website as well! I really appreciate all the help and ideas guys! Thanks so much!

Handsome perp!

Pork sits fine with some dogs and not so well with others. Mallace throws up when I give her pork 🙄 the other dogs do just fine. Probably best to just avoid it if you’re already hesitant.

I’ll check out the recipes once I’m off work. Might get me back into prepping their meals again!
Ya, I feel like Deer and Turkey are a good base protein. Turkey is supposed to be good for digestion, and theres the turkey necks to for bone. If I couldn't get turkey for some reason, I'de probably so lamb since thats also supposed to be good for digestion. Tell me what you think of the recipes! I'm ordering Alasakn Salmon oil for him, and hoping to get ingredients and do the switch next week!

Sad you lost her :( it’s so tough when it’s time and you have to slowly watch their bodies go.
Thank you. Her death was very sudden so while it was terrible and traumatic, in many ways it was easier than the slow decline of my boy.

Thank you.

My vet recommended Krill Oil over Salmon. For the life of me I can't remember why though.

You can also feed wild caught herring with a meal. I know I keep saying Asian Market 🙄 , but they’re amazing for organs and other protein sources. They sell all of the body parts that a traditional grocery store wouldn’t even consider selling. There you can get bags of chicken feet too.

They also sell fertile quail eggs 🤫

Here is a site my daughter told me about. She has ordered from them twice and is very happy with the quality. She lives in Spokane and even with the product coming from Florida it took about 3 days.

Herring, good to know! When we go to the beach to fish, we catch a bunch of Surf Smelt, so I don't know if that is any good. Adding Herring to the list for the Asian market! 😉

Aright, were gonna stop at an Asian market next week, and anything we can't get there we will get at a local butcher, or the Co-op or other store for Organic vegetables. We usually go to the Co-op for our Organic produce, so that will be an easy stop.
We got the Salmon oil today, and the Pumpkin powder is arriving next week. We also got a food scale for multiple reasons, including weighing meat.
I also convinced another friend of mine who is always invested in a natural approach, to possibly switch to raw as well! She'll be using that article and this thread for information. Thanks so much for your help guys! I'll keep posted on who his first meal goes, and his progress as we go. I'm so excited for this! Thank you so much! Comet and future puppy appreciates it!
