Question for the duck folks... a co-worker has a duck that is laying eggs and she and other people, including me, have attempted to eat the eggs but they have an off smell about them - seems to be the shell and membrane.  I even hard boiled two and the 'smell' was still there.  Is this a duck thing or what would cause this.  The internal part of the eggs tasted fine but the small was pretty gross.
Hmmm... Mine don't smell. Or at least I've never noticed it. Are they old or dirty? I keep mine on the counter until needed (never more than a few days though). I have hard boiled them too and can't say I remember any smell.

From what I have researched the smell is related to something in their diet. Some plants cause the eggs to have an "off" smell to them. Like too much garlic can make the eggs smell. Other than that I don't know anything else that would make an egg smell.

I went Wyendote hunting and ended up with two more EE hens and a Plymouth Bar Rock.  The flock is trying to figure each other out.  The new ones, minus the Bar Rock, are easy to distinguish.  The guy had a Wyendote Rooster that rode them hard.  I put some spray wound care from where he had been.
my first year this year with wyandotes not real sure I like them they are kinda mean and not really smart...could just be mine though...

thanks. That was what we were checking out today I notice changes in pelleted foods make to the smell of my eggs when cooked we thought she might still have been giving a starter food perhaps grubs in a septic field? We will figure it out

I'm not thrilled with my SLW either. Mine are real "pecky" too and they are loud. They always seem to be griping about something. I have 3. I call them the "Hag" sisters. They are like 3 old hags with nothing better to do than run their mouth and boss everyone around, lol.

I gatta say though "big mama" my jubilee Orpington rules the yard with an iron beak as it were...she keeps all the girls in line...

I got my first duck egg today!!! I still haven't separated the runners from the Muscovy, so I'm not really sure which laid the egg first... As small as it is I'm thinking runners. It was in a bad spot, I almost didn't see it and nearly crushed it. Oh well, it will be breakfast in the morning.
