Yay for ducklings i have 5 2 day old anacona ducklings now . But man that sucks with the mites little ******** are hard to get rid of . My oldest chickens are like 17 weeks old i hope Watson starts laying before Aug hits if not i may have to wait for egg until fall :(
I'm using Eprinex pour on to treat them. It's so much easier than dusting all those birds, and it also worms them at the same time and has no egg withdrawal period. It killed the mites, but not the eggs, so I will retreat to make sure and kill any newly hatched mites on my birds. Screwball was the Only bird who had mites and eggs, but still did everyone. I got a bale of hay yesterday for my nest boxes. Going to keep using wood shavings as bedding, but hay for nesting material. Will see how they like it once I open up their nest boxes and put dummy eggs in them. I think I read that chickens start laying between 20 and 24 weeks of age. So I am getting everything ready to try and teach them where to lay.

Got 2 eggs, 2 days in a row from Pearl!
They're a pretty green/gray and DELICIOUS.

Thanks for all the kind words. Sadie was the youngest and had been free ranging with the big girls for a few weeks before this. It was an awful accident, but it helped me learn how to cope and what to do in that situation.

Where does everyone get dummy eggs?
Pearl has been letting herself in to lay in my mud/laundry room...lol
I would LOVE for her to actually lay in the nesting box

Some people use golf balls and even the plastic Easter eggs. Can u make the mud room non accessible? If the nesting box you want her to use is movable, perhaps you can put it in the mud room, let her lay there a couple of times, then move the nesting box to where you want her to lay and block off the mud room. Just a thought

Finally got my a frame chicken tractor completed and my girls moved into it. They have been in absolute hog heaven, scratching, eating grass & weeds and dust bathing. They seem much happier. Also we had a heavy rain the last few days and the run beneath stays dry except along the edges and the roosting/nest area above is leak free. One happy chickee daddy right here. lol Of course, chicken math is already setting in and I'm thinking of building a larger stationary coop with attached run to add to my flock of 4. I'd still use the tractor but maybe throw a breeding trio in there and keep my egg girls in larger coop. NEVER ENDING!! lol

I had fun (NOT) driving through some of the downpours in SA yesterday and we did get some rain up here in McKinney overnight and early this morning
.

I was thinking about using my chicken tractor the same way. Putting a few hens and a roo in and seeing if we can get some chicks
