The 9th Annual BYC Easter Hatchalong!

Saw this video about hatching eggs without a shell- it would be hard not to meddle before day 21-22

It is fun to watch however it’s done in a very sterilized environment not with a bunch of students hanging over the Petri dishes. After reading more about it on line the scientist have it down to about 50 percent. Not bad actually.

One of my hens suddenly turned into an egg eater, and got 4 of my 8 marked eggs. None of them exhibited signs before I'm so upset right now. I was able to candle a couple eggs and at least one of them seems to have a dark spot inside so I'm still hopeful for the rest of them. I currently have her separate from everyone else. So far the remaining eggs are all still there. This literally made me feel sick to my stomach. I haven't noticed any smells so I don't see that as being the reason for her to eat them. She does seem to be the most aggressive hen, and I have no reason to believe it was just the marked eggs. I plan on culling her as soon as I increase my flock. What horrible luck I've had with my first try.

Sorry that happened. Good luck with the remaining eggs.

Hey all just an update on my hatch. Which I'm very unhappy with.

Bad news only 2 maybe 3 swimmers.

Out of I think it was 35 eggs set 18 had damage tonight at candling. Hairline cracks... Perhaps they were partially frozen when I brought them in. Unusually I didn't candle the eggs before setting them this time around because I had only collected the previous two days.

18 cracked eggs
2 swimmers and 1 ?
And it looks like 14 clears. Ouch bad odds but I knew most probably wouldn't be fertile. Our little male in that group is prejudiced against the A& Ms. Idk why. He also hadn't been in with them long after being too rough on the Pharoah girls in the group. He had been separated for a break for them.

Unfortunately over the weekend we lost one of our two Pharoah females to what I believe was a blockage in her digestive tract. She went down hill very quickly and we decided culling was the most humane when we couldn't get her to turn around. Always a hard decision to make.

I don't know for sure but I'm hoping that those eggs may contain her babies.

This is our worst numbers ever except for some shipped eggs a couple years ago(when cracked open most of those weren't even fertile). I suspect the two quail eggs developing were the only two fertile eggs.
Good luck with the remaining eggs. :fl
