Jeremy are you interested in working on a Buff Laced (without the black specks)?

Nellie, I don't think so, mostly due to the constraints put on me by living in the city...

I think I have (finally) decided to continue to work with the BBS, as I feel I have a nice flock of birds right now as well as (with hopeful help from you) large fowl Chocolates. I thought I had settled on Mottled but the Chocolate gene is so fascinating IMO. Being able to sell sexed day old chicks to other urban farmers here in the city is a big plus, most people here don't want roosters. I also feel that the Choc gene plays well with BBS, meaning that I can keep all of the colors together in one flock, as long as I maintain records as to what roosters recessively carry the Choc gene. To top it all off you get Mauve when you combine the Blue and Chocolate genes!

Just seems to make sense.

That's funny, I did a search on Calico and their are Calico Cochins - very similar.......

When Calico was mentioned this was my first though too.

Calico Cochins are a "byproduct" of the Mille Fleur Cochin project. From what I understand they're the birds that didn't conform to the Mille Fleur standards but still bred somewhat true to color. Most birds show similar red/brown, black and white patterns. So they're similar in phenotype but a different genetic makeup. Mille Fleur and Calico Cochins would be more closely "related" to Jubilee and Mottled Orps.

I did not know that. Thank you for sharing that information.

Were you thinking of getting a split to black, carrying the chocolate gene cockerel, where all pullets would be chocolate?

Hey you all. I took a few pics this afternoon and thought you might enjoy seeing some blacks. This girl right here is going to be 7yrs old in June. Grandma is her name. She doesnt lay much anymore but she was one of my original hens that came from Sandhill when I first started loving Orps and had no idea about the imports. She has always been very English typey
