Quick pic of my boy Harry. Someone relieved him of the feathers in the back of his neck so he looks a little ewe necked lol but he's not.

So pretty! I do love Buffs. :D

I know very little about hatchery birds..My layers are large birds. I have been breeding these for 30 some years. They make great table fair and lay 3 oz eggs. Nothing puny here. I never knew there were so many hatchery's till I started on BYC. I live in Farm country and purchased most of my stock when my daughter started 4H. We have some of the best chicken breeders in the world in Wisconsin. We just need top Orpingtons in Wisconsin, and Silkies. The stuff you see at the shows need a little help. That is why I am here to learn from all of you wonderful people. I am stuffing them Orps. They eat 2 lbs of feed a day, plus vegetables, fruits, bugs and what ever they find. They are very active about foraging and I like to see that. Even in the deep snow they are out looking for food. I love my Orps!! I just wish I could fill them up and not worry about making them fat and unhealthy.
20 years ago one of the biggest purebred poultry farms was at Waterford, WI. The Halbach family, they had around 250 types of bantams, large birds, ducks, geese and turkeys. I went there once, it's was something to see. Harry Halbach was the President of the APA and his wife was also Presdent of the APA. There son Jeff is the President of the ABA now. Those folks had a big business selling show type birds. Like everything else they got to old to keep up. One time there was alot of good ones in your backdoor.

Really nice pair of Buffs. . Looks like they are going to be big

I have a Cock that is blue that I like his type for the mosst part. He is to dark and has gotten darker after his molt. Last year I only bred him one time to one hen that was lighter and he did produce some lighter chicks. In fact I have one that is bigger and not as nice as his father as far as body type goes. His tail is not as nice, His comb is not as nice. His color is not exactly what I like in my blues. I am trying him out though. The chicks I showed pictured are from the son over a splash. I now have the Cock bird over the Splash.
Here is the Cock and the "cockerel

These are week old chicks off the the above cockerel. And the last batch in the tub ishowed yesterday are off him over a splash hen. I am trying to test out blue coloring off him. Of course I have hatched more splash than blue but enough to see how the blue color will look. I am the mad scientist this year with my test hatchings.

The next chicks are a few just turned 3 months yesterday and the smaller ones two weeks behind. They are my Black Cock over splash hen test. Their were some to dark. I have given most of them away. I kept these lighter ones to see how the lacing would do. They look like the lacing is going to be good. Waiting for them to fill out more and see how their type is and if I want to try this cross again with a different Black Cock.
