The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Hey, has anyone heard from Dee lately? Hope all is well.

Dee could you drop us a line and let us know you are doing ok. We miss you

And now with the chocolates, record keeping is sooooooo important with the visibly black split to chocolate roosters, which will reek havoc in the blue line if unknowingly used.   Once the black splits get into circulation it will be impossible to know which ones they are.

After careful consideration we have decided to toe punch any blacks born to our chocolates.  ( Toe punching :sick   a new venture for me)   We don't know at birth which are pullets and which are cockerels as only the cockerels can be split to chocolate but both will be toe punched for permanent identification.  It is my understanding it is vital to breed chocolate back to black occasionally to keep the deep chocolate color, but there should be a permanent identification for the splits.

It's not a fix all as we are only one tiny part of the breeding community but it is our contribution.  :)

From a genetics standpoint I do not understand the "back to black" breedings. If chocolate is a dilute, then the black genetics of the original birds should remain unchanged right? I am not saying it is not sound "science", I just don't understand it.

Are you going to hatch any mauve chicks ever?

Ya know, I thought about that too, but that was my understanding. But since neither would change the color of the other (similar to Lavender and Black breedings I believe) how could it benefit the chocolates? Could someone chime in and help us out with this? RebelYell, Jeremy? Maybe there is no need to breed black to chocolate short of gene diversity...

Thank you for that input!

I have done extensive research and investigation of the background of my flock and I am very comfortable when I say they are NOT Pure English.

The reason for me posting the pictures of my baby was not to claim he was not show quaility, because I do not show, but just to let people know that just because you buy from someone that claims they are Pure English does not mean they are. By Pure English I mean that the seller knows the background of their flock and knows that they are not mixed with American.

Well technically all Orpingtons are English so it is sometimes a trick of the English language that is used. Not all Orpingtons are Pure UK imported birds or European imported birds and those are very different also. "Everything on the internet is True" LOL.

I am thinking about it (with my many other projects I have going  )  Suggestions on how to start?  Best direction to go?

Just put a splash hen or two in your chocolate pen. You could tell all chicks from the blue mating at hatch. Boys will be blue girls will be mauve. Then sell them all to me... Muhahaha!

Edit** unless you still have your beautiful beautiful chocolate split boy in there. Then it won't be so simple. Again, I'm sure you knew that.

But don't take what I say to the bank. I'd bet my buttons you know more than me. I've only been dabbling in chickens for a little over a year. I have been a genetics student for years though.

Yes, Newly pure imported UK Orpingtons or European.

Your comment is even questionable because there is no definate evidence that the Araucana was here in South Ameraucana originally or were brought there at one time by early sea farers.

It really doesn't matter much the only thing that matters is you know who you are getting your birds from personally. Websites are made not bred.
