The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Reposting to see if anyone can help me out. I really want to get started with these birds, but if I get a combination that wont allow me to get blue in the offspring then it'll be a huge letdown.

I believe Splash X Black = will produce blue. But don't quote me on it since I do not breed orps. I only have a couple and they are my backyard eye candy. Right now my orps are raising 4 silkie chicks. They are very good mothers and take really good care of the silkies. So I do believe they can live together.

Here is a picture of the flock. One of the hen giving me the stink eye for taking pictures of the silkie chicks.

Information on Blue Genetic Breeding:
Blue (Bb) X Blue (Bb) = 50% Blue (Bb), 25% Black (BB), 25% Splash (bb)

Blue (Bb) X Splash (bb) = 50% Blue (Bb), 50% Splash (bb)

Blue (Bb) X Black (BB) = 50% Blue (Bb), 50% Black (BB)

Splash (bb) X Black (BB) = 100% Blue (Bb)

Black (BB) X Black (BB) = 100% Black (BB)

Splash (bb) X Splash (bb) = 100% Splash (bb)

So if I order blue orphingtons from a hatchery, assuming I can't find any in my area with better stock. Any of the black and splash ones I receive will still carry the genes to produce blue offspring as long as I'm not breeding BlackXBlack or SplashXSplash? I was just unsure of how that trait was passed on. You would think if they were selling blue orphingtons they would just breed black to splash, rather than just selling them in all 3 colors and saying well you get what you get. I only wanted to get about 5 or 6 hens and 1 rooster to allow myself a little variety to go along with my black australorps and silkies.

Can we please make this clear... It's Orpington NOT Orphington. It's my #1 pet peeve... To everyone where I live it's an "Orphington" and being English its not.

Some breeders will ship chicks but not in this heat. We will ship beginning September again unless the weather cools down before that.

I am glad when I get a splash. It is my personal favorite of the blue spectrum. I know having them is valuable for breeding blues. Black chicks do not carry blue. Only blue (one dilute gene) and splash (two dilute genes) carry blue. Some blues can be very dark and look black however.

Everyone I have ever heard pronounce the breed has said Orphington, so you'll have to excuse me for just reading over it and never noticing the difference. I imagine I will continue to say it that way, as arguing with old timers about how to pronounce chicken names will do little to aid the sales of my small farm.

If black chicks do not carry any blue genes, why does everyone recommend black X splash to get blue? If the answer is obvious forgive me, but I will admit I know very little about genetics. Most of what I have learned about chicken genetics, was just enough to figure out how to breed sex links for other people.

Because you will get blue every time. All the chicks will inherit a blue gene from the splash parent. The black is just the background that the one gene will dilute.

In that case the only question left to me is, does anybody in eastern nc have these birds? Or is anyone selling hatching eggs from good stock anytime soon?
