Thanks to YOU ! ! ! That is my beautiful Julie ..... one of these days I am gonna get a really good picture that shows her gorgeous lacing, too. She is so sweet. When I come outside, she is one of the first to greet me. She comes running up to me. Of course, I love that.
Today I was gathering eggs this evening and just perusing the flock. I just couldn't be happier with what I have to work with this year in the fall. Now, the main concern I have is someones dog that has been coming at nite when we are not at home. He destroyed 8 of my best chicks a few weeks back by tearing a hole a pen that was up off the ground and just this past Thursday I saw him when we got home at 11 pm. He was large and ran before we could get the house unlocked and get the gun. He was trying to rip into my last chicks on wire but was unsuccessful.
I have never used electric fencing but do you think that would work to keep him out of the yard? I have got to do something before we leave for a few days in Sept. It is way to hot and I don't have time to completely rewire with something to withstand a dog that size before we leave. I have put picket fence panels around a few vunerable chicken wire sections of my adult girls.
Joy I have one black pullet out of Winston that look much like the O's I really like her. I have one blue cockerel out of the youngest bunch that is really pretty awesome. All my groups have hit growth spurts and look like they are growing daily before my eyes. I culled out sixteen 3 month olds and one four month old cockerel. I hope I didn't make any mistakes but to late now. My youngest group of Charlie chicks look so good and I may keep them all. They are the sweetest things. My blue cockerel in that bunch wants me to pet him a little everyime I open the cage door. I need to name him cause I think he is just going to have to stay here.
I have eight other blue cockerels that I just can't make any decisions on yet. There are things I like about all of them. I kept one Charlie Splash cockerel and I have a splash cockerel from Joy. I will see which one I want to use when they get a bit older.
I have seven black cockerels yet.
This is just so much fun except for that pesky dog.
I took all the broodies off the nest cause I was just plain tired of it. Moved them all to a pen with a cockerel they didn't know and other girls that were not their flock mates. Seems to be working. None in this group is laying either so nothing to set on and no nest. Half of them are moulting to boot.
Julie I don't know if this will work for a hungry dog, but we are using a deer sprayer http://www.amazon.com/Havahart-5265...2?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1282526520&sr=8-2 to keep our hens off the grass. It also had worked really well in years past at scaring away deer from my rose bushes. But a hungry sly dog, IDK just thought I'd let you know
We use electric fence when we put our cows out on the corn stalks in the fall.......Our dogs avoid it like the plague. I've seen them in the past as pups touch it and it only takes once for them to learn it's something they don't want to touch. You might have to string two or three strands so he can't go over or under it.
