The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Hey Beth - I have one little blue orp hatch about 2 hours ago that belongs to you !! Another egg has a nice big pip in it, so hoping that chick will be out soon. Two more eggs are due to hatch on Tuesday, then the rest for you and Jeremy go in the hatcher on 08/26...not much longer. As soon as these two are dried out good, I'll take pictures and post them for you.

Jeremy - I plan on taking photos of every batch of chicks that I hatch before I ship them, so I'll be happy to take a couple of photos for you and send. I'll do my best to get some photos of hatching, but pictures usually don't turn out so good in teh incubator, but will give it a shot.

Julie - sounds like some electric fencing might do the trick. I sure hope you figure something out to solve the dog problem. It is just so bizarre than he never comes unless you are not home. I sure hope that you get a few good chicks from Winston. Be sure to post photos when you get a chance. We're going to have to do some chicken swapping in the spring !!

I'm going to try to get some photos tomorrow of all my W&C chicks. Out of these last 4 W&C chicks that hatched, I'm about 90% sure that I have 1 cockerel and 3 pullets. I'm sure hoping my guess is correct.

She looks lovely even with the less than perfect photo, Kathy. She looks like a dark blue, which is my preference. Would love to see a really good photo of her !!

And Julie - Lizzie is simply stunning !!!

for the rest! The brooder is all ready to go!

Julie, definitely several strands of hot wire- are we talking big like a pittie or a GSD size? Put one at 8" off the ground and then at increments on up to where you think his nose and ears are when he would be eyeballing chickies- if he hits his nose and ears it will send him howling home.

I've looked back through this post to find day old pictures of BBS. I have eggs going to lockdown tomorrow and I'm wondering if you can tell the difference that early between the blue and the splash...I assume the blacks are black?

Cheryl,

You will be able to tell a splash immediately upon hatching - it will be white. I've posted a picture below of a splash chick several hours old. You will have more trouble telling the dark blue from the black...sometimes they will fool you.

Julie: Absolutely use some hot wire!! We currently have two strands around our 25x30 chicken yard, one is about 6" off the ground and the next around 12", only on at night. We are also thinking of putting a strand around the top just in case it's a climbing type villain that would grab the wire above the 12" strand, that way when they got to the top they would get an unexpected surprise.

I am all for hot wire to keep my flock safe. I hope you can come up with something to keep him from getting anymore of your birds, I hate when people let their pets become someone elses nightmare....
