The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Could you explain "tail coverts" please?
Tail coverts are the wide feathers covering the base of that Wyandotte's main tail feathers. Can you see the stiff tail feathers with those colored feathers covering the bases? Good heavy , wide feather quality is important, especially in hens. They will have far less "rooster damage" if their back and tail feathers are wide and thick. Now look at the black's tail, and you will see much narrower feathers that look rumpled as they are lacking substance. Because of this you see a dip in front of her tail.

I see, thanks!

Man, this thread has been so slow since I've visited. Is it because I haven't posted pics lately or what? Where are all of the Orp pics? I'll be posting some soon. Ya'll wait. Let's get this thread going strong again. All of the pics that are recent are great. I'm just used to seeing so many more pics. Is every one holding out like me?

A question for English Orpington people...

My orpington butts are getting to be a mess. It's freezing here so no baths. What do you do to keep their butts clean? Trim the feathers off?

Thanks :)

I want a Jubilee, but have decided to practice working on type with just Black Orps until I figure out how to cull good. Here is my best hen (imo) and her roo. Keep in mind, I just got into chickens this year and am just now beginning to select for breeding so my stock is small scale. They are both under 8 months in these pics I think.

Here are some pics to speed things up :) Partridge Isabel cuckoo Gold laced Silver jubilee Jubilee
Gorgeous!! I especially like that last jubilee girl! Nice dark base color. The only time I've taken feathers from a vent was with my bantam Cochins to increase fertility. I plucked them so that nothing was left behind to stick out and cause pain.

I was planning on taking some pictures today... BUT mother nature had different plans. Raining and cold... :(
