The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I'm thinking of starting my own color of orpingtons!! A blue english cuckoo orp! Tell me what y'all think of my idea

Like this? He is a 4 month old cockerel. He's already bigger than my blue and my mottled cockerels that are older and he still has some filling out to go.

Ok question: the big fluffy tushies cause breeding problems in English orps? And I read that laying isn't all that good. How many eggs do you guys get from your English Orps and do you have to do anything to help the birds fertilize their eggs successfully?

It really does depend on the bird. Some lay every day and some just lay about 3 eggs/week.

I pluck the feathers around the vents of both the hens and the cocks. Seems the pullets will start laying a few weeks to a month or so before the cockerel is mature enough. Patience......kills me haha.

Fertility is Ok with the English Orps but they are pretty much seasonal layers. Their first laying season is excellent and they will pretty much lay through their first winter. But from about 18 months on their molt season (or off lay) gets longer and longer - 3 to 5 months without laying is not uncommon.

In England they actually have a laying season and are used more for show than for utility birds.
But they sure are pretty

Hi!! Your chicks are the creme de la creme. I hope to have some of your babies soon! Thanks for answering my questions. Question for you: what color are the chickens in the first picture that look buff/gold with black tail feathers? I'm drooling!! Gorgeous birds!
