The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I only have a minute before I need to dash out but I wanted to let Julie know (and anyone else interested) that the Black Roo is alive!

He disappeared on the 2nd (I think) while I was out taking pictures of his siblings. I came back 20-30 minutes later and Poof! No Black Rooster!??

I looked everywhere--everywhere. I left for a long weekend and have been back 2 days--and still no Roo.

Today my Dad was in the workshed and wanted to show me the nestboxes he made for the chickens. We were out there for over a half hour and then he mentions the "bird hiding in here somewhere"

My eyes bugged out--and I said WHERE? He said he didn't know, (he can't see very well anymore) and then I asked why he thought it was a chicken---

Silly me, that's my Daddy I am talking too... So--he gave me the Dad look and said "I know what a chicken sounds like" and led me to the general area that he was hearing sounds.

I start moving wood, pulling out bottles of glue --and hoping. Out pops this black head and YES! It was the Black Orpington Roo!

Thinner but still in good condition. I have no idea how or why he hid in there and stayed in there for so long. He could have gotten out easily but didn't.

Anyway, he's back and safe and I am so relieved. And my Dad got extra hugs and kisses

YAY, Germaine!!! I am SO glad you found him! That is really odd he hid out - you would think he would want to join up with his friends. Something must really have scared him.

How soon would little roos show tail? I do not have any indications of tail feathers, and four of mine are two weeks plus a day or two.

Thanks everyone. That is just the weirdest thing. His pen is actually on the other side of the wall he was hiding in (?) Just a load of wood scraps and glue bottles and just "shed" stuff.

Beth! Now you know we need pictures! Mine are so big now it's hard to remember except some of them take forever to get tail feathers!

Not sure if it is true but I seem to recall that they sometimes turn out to be the very best types. They have got to be little butterballs about now.

A little change of suject. I read something sad on one of the English forums

David Pownall who is well know in UK for his Show winning Orpingtons had 150 birds stolen.

Sep 03, 2010 2:31 am

I had a phone call this morning from David Pownall, informing me that he was robbed during the night, last night.

He has had approximately 150 birds taken:

50 large buff Orpingtons,
30 large black Orpingtons,
20 black bantam Orpingtons,
20 large white Wyandottes
20 exhibition Aylesbury ducks.

He is located in the North West, near Manchester.

Please all be vigilant- if you are offered quality stock / see them at sales please PM me.

Thanks,

This was a copy of the thread. Turns out they were taken by some foreigners in the country and killed to eat.

They seem to have lots of chicken theifs in England from what I read. I feel so bad for him.
