The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I don't know if this works for chickens but in goats if you add vinegar to their diet you end up with more girls. It's something about the ph of the female that adding vinegar to will make the girls take and the boys not. We put it in their feed.
Worth a try!

I have also heard the vingegar thing, but I don't think it's proven. If you do a search here on organic Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV, it's been spoken about before. Some people swear by it. Might be worth a shot!!!

That is so funny that you mention the ACV. My mother used to tell me about the old wife's tale of how they used to assure giving birth to a female (or was it a male?) ..... douche with vinegar before conception.

Mind you, this was in the early 1900s!

Hmmmm....I give mine ACV in their water on a regular basis. I wonder if I need to up the dose and more often.

LOLOL...I've never heard that before Kathy.

I would try taking some feed and adding a capful of vinegar to the feed and see if they will eat it. I would be careful about upping it in the water, you don't want them to back off the water cause it tastes funny.

Here is an update on my chicks from Joy- THEY HATE THE CAMERA, so the pics are limited, and they are all acting like the camera is prelude to the chopping block or something.

Skoche- see, she is growing! (she=I am being hopeful)

This is the big blue chick from the first set of four, I am thinking a roo,, and if so, Maximus.

In this group shot, you can see Maximus on the far right, sulking because I picked him up! They had all been playing, and were covered in shavings.

Hey Beth - they are growing like little weeds !!! Skoche's wing feathers indicate a pullet, but I could be wrong (I sure was on the last batch I hatched). Wow - she/he is really growing up. Is he/she still as sweet and spoiled? Maximus is definitely a boy. Can't tell enough on the others, but it looks like the other blue could be a boy too. If you can get some better head and wing shots, we might be able to tell more.

Joy, I will try again tonight when they are tired out- they get hyped when they play, and they were objecting strenuously to the camera- and this morning I am thinking all four of the first set are boys- we have similar shoulder and tail feathers like Maximus- so I am crossing my fingers for Skoche and her hatchmate!

Thank you for helping post the picture..
These are 17 weeks..... U nless they change a whole lot as they mature, out of 7 chicks there are 3 blue and one splash roo...

Beth,
Me and Cindy thought we had a blue boy once and named him Big Mack, Gee that chick was big. She turned into Maxine, the mother of your new Splash Cloud.
