Sorry, but the US SOP just doesn't do it for me. I sold my 'American Type' Orps because of this. I love fluff!

ETA: Just realized my husband is really into this for the eggs; Ameraucanas, Marans, Ducks... (color and size). I am into pretty, fluffy things; Cochins & English Orps.

To really tell the difference between the good SOP birds and the better English Os you MUST handle them. The main difference I can tell you about is that the good EOs have an incredible depth of keel bone (breast bone) that fills your hand, and that depth continues right between their legs, making a very round underline. The tail set is a bit higher too, and the back is a bit shorter. If you want EO type, pick up those chicks, and put them in the palm of your hand with their legs dangling through your fingers. You can feel the deep keel . Despite all the extra fluff, EOs will produce more meat due to those deep, round bodies.

You'll see more leg, and a flatter back with lower tail set on SOP birds.

The best laceing for blue you can get from blacks with the blue gene of both side.

what do you mean if the bird is black it dose not carry the ( black deluting geen" BLUE" )

WHEN BREEDING BLUE
black--dose not carry the geen
blue--is heterozigouse caring only one coppy of the geen
splash---is homozigouse carrying two coppys of the geen

so geneticly black can not be" blue geen "

so sorry jim i love the SOP typ birds but in that side by side i would say 100% OF THE TIME TAKE THE EOs they may not fit the SOP but somtimes fitting in the peramiters set by the APA SOP dose not mean they are the prittest/best looking

US orpingtons fit standered better but UK orpingtons look better

Thank you everyone for the great info and photo's! I guess my personal preference would be the big fluffy EO butterballs walking about the lawn. I can certainly relate to the extra fluff, round physique and short legs.

a wonderful post.the english feel like a heavy little pumpkin in the hand. even very young you can feel the meat , they seem to put energy into this aspect first , then spend energy in feathers..very economical..great pictures for illustration vickie.
