Partridge Hatch #2!
For some reason, I am having my Partridges all hatching 2 days late, on the end of day 23, instead of 21. Both this and my previous hatches were on day 23. Doesn't seem to have affected them negatively, they're nice, healthy chicks, but just seems a little odd. Is this common in Orpingtons?

Any way, here's some pictures, enjoy!

Hi Liam,
That's usually indicative that your temperature setting is just a little low. Although our biggest English usually seem to be close to a day later than other smaller varieties as well. Congratulations on the hatch!

All of these hatching photos are making me anxious. I have a load in lockdown. I'm expecting them late tomorrow. I can't wait. Reds, Jubilees, Chocolate Bantams, LF Chocolate projects, Gold Laced and or Black (mixed group), and BBS Ameraucans. I'm curious to see how the Gold Laced and Blacks come out. These were grouped together when one Gold Laced and one Black hen started laying. I can kind of tell the difference between the eggs. But, I'm sure that the Black roosters were the sire on this hatch. They have since been separated as of 2 weeks ago. My GL rooster is now doing his job with the GL hens. Wish me luck.

Good luck! That mix of Orps sounds super cute.

I have a Brinsea Octogon EX, set the temp. for 99.6, is this too low??

I would think that is just right, but I'll defer to the experts on here.
However, I do think that the timing of hatches (especially multiple hatches) might be a better indicator than the thermometer on the incubator.
Either way, if you are getting good hatch rates of healthy chicks, I probably wouldn't even mess with it.

I agree with matte on this. However, I'm no expert. But, I do know that the experts (I mean poultry hatcheries), start at higher temps and progress downward at hatch time. Usually, to about 98.5° at hatch time. But, 99.5° is considered the optimum average temp by most. So, you are perfect at 99.6°. Like matte said, if you run this temp and they hatch on target at Day 21, you're there on temp.
